Feedback Friday!!

It's always nice to get feedback, particularly when you know what you've delivered helps your client feel more confident in their CV.

When David originally came to me out of five, he scored his CV 3 and felt 'somewhat confident' in its content. If we're honest, that's probably how most of us feel!

We had an initial conversation that allowed me to understand what was driving those scores and feelings.

As an IT consultant, he has changed roles frequently and was struggling with how to include all the amazing achievements without it becoming an epic CV tome way more than the mythical 2 pages!

I took his original CV along with some adverts for the type of roles he was interested in, and created an initial draft. We then had a video call going through it, making changes, and adding in detail.

The result is a resounding 5 out of 5 for how confident David now feels in his new CV. He also mentioned that I was articulate and great at asking the right questions to get the information needed, and was pleased that the whole process was very dialogue-driven. He felt this allowed him to speak in his narrative, and that I then took this narrative to transform his CV content so it expressed not just what he did, but also his achievements and talents.

So if writing your CV fills you with dread, but talking about your jobs and what you did over a tea or coffee doesn't, then I would love to help you be more confident in your CV and its content.

Whilst there's a lot of information about how technology isn't helping job seekers, used in the right way AI can help you land your dream job.

I have been testing out ChatGPT and other forms of AI to see how they can help with job searching and here's what I've found it is useful for so far:

✅ Helping you summarise the key skills from a job description in seconds

✅ Reviewing your LinkedIn profile and suggesting improvements

I have seen a rise in comments when someone asks for recommendation of a CV writer that say you don't need one get ChatGPT/Gemini/CoPilot to write it for you.

Whilst technically it can, if you don't use it in the right way you will end up with:

🚫 Generic, information
🚫 Words that we don't use in everyday conversation like spearheaded and orchestrated
🚫 A lack of specific detail about your accomplishments
🚫 It may add information
🚫 It may delete important information

This is the figure quoted in a Jobscan study, which estimates that up to 75% of CVs are rejected by ATS before a recruiter sees them due to formatting issues, lack of keywords, or other factors.

A CV isn’t a CV if it is just a list of jobs and dates.

The whole idea of your CV is to show a recruiter that you would be a great candidate to interview. They make that decision based on what you’ve done in the past and more importantly what you’ve been responsible for and what you’ve achieved.

So whether you are an ace HR Administrator, whose forte is creating accurate contracts and chasing line managers for all the new starter details to get employees paid on time, or an amazing HR Director who has delivered a HR Transformation project that saved £500k, you’ve all got achievements!!

What will make your CV even more compelling is if you can include some numbers. Examples include processing 50 new starters and leavers a month, delivering a HR project to a tight 6 month deadline or saving 3 hours of admin time a month with a new process.

Even if you can’t quantify the benefit, don't leave it to the recruiter to assume anything. If you know it saved but you’re not sure how much, just saying you saved time is still important. The idea of your CV is to make it easy for the recruiter to choose you, don’t make them think too hard!!

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me a CV with a 3 paragraph profile.
The stats say that a recruiter reads a CV initially for something like 10 - 12 seconds. If you have three weighty paragraphs at the top which are all about what you want to get from your next role, you’re missing a trick.

In that 10 seconds you want them to scan read a short 40 - 80 word paragraph, a few key skills and get into your achievements where it shows not what you want but that you can deliver what they want.

Please don’t be tempted to ask ChatGPT to write you a generic statement, because it will give you the same text as someone else who types in to create me a profile statement for a HR Manager.

If you’re going to use this type of tech for helping you with your CV, put your information in and ask it to summarise, that way you will get something more tailored to you and your skills.
