The recent deluge has meant the pipe from our gutter to our secondary water tank had come unattached, we therefore needed to go up onto the roof of our barn and reattached it. [All of the water we use in the house is from rainwater harvesting, the barn is our backup if we ever run out of water from the tank that is collected off the house roof - not much danger of that at the moment]. Up on the roof was an amazing collection of thick cushions of mosses and lichens. I love the little trumpet horns.
I'm starting to get slightly obsessed with mosses - I have a new commission from National Trust as part of their Riverlands project across two of their sites; Heddon Valley and West Challacombe Manor. I will be taking two groups of young people to both sites to collect words and write wetlandy-things starting next month. But first research . . . on Friday I had a site visit with the ranger team to West Challacombe managing to dodge all the rain.
