Technical qualifications and experience are a critical factor but mining companies increasingly need French/Spanish/Portuguese language in key roles to satisfy local government requirements and the local language at mine site. And private investment in the mining sector now extends those language skills to Russian, Chinese and Arabic, particularly at the management level. Maybe time to think about broader skills.

ICMM’s contribution to the business and human rights agenda
In December, ICMM's Aidan Davy and Claire White attended the Annual Forum of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights in Geneva.

The forum provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress business has made on human rights in the two and half years since the unanimous adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights. However, the lack of business voices led some participants to question businesses’ progress with implementing the Guiding Principles. This reflects perceptions from a recent ICMM human rights and Indigenous Peoples workshop held in Colombia, where Dr Alexandra Guaqueta, member of the UN working group on business and human rights, noted that many stakeholders think business is not moving quickly enough to ensure their management systems address human rights.
