White Faced Whistling Duck: Owner Search 🤍

We are currently caring for a white faced whistling duck that was rescued by a kind member of the public in Bristol this afternoon. It has an ID ring (not BTO), meaning wildlife rescues cannot accept as the duck is considered domestic. We have been advised to try and locate the owner.

Based on previous sightings and weight, we think this lovely has been in the wild for a little while.

Please note this photo is a stock image and not of the duck in our care. Proof of ownership/vet care/the ring number will be required. In the meantime, they are safely with one of our team being well looked after.

4 hour rescue 😅

Today was an absolutely exhausting one. A male swan and two of his babies were two boat locks apart from the female and remaining cygnets. One of the locks being where recent fatalities have occurred, and with heavy boat traffic due to the weekend.

The male eventually opted to return through the second lock with his partner and remaining young, leaving the two cygnets behind alone. They were at risk of going onto the river where they wouldn’t have survived. Understandably, they were very confused to be somewhere unfamiliar which made them wary and challenging to catch. This took immense patience from Shannon and Amy who were there over 4 hours, operating locks and going back and forth to ensure everyone’s safety.

A particular thank you to the CRT volunteer lock keepers on shift today who were immensely patient and helpful. And to those boaters passing during the rescue who were so compassionate and willing to follow instructions to aid our efforts. With swans and young so far apart and on such a busy boat day, it took a real team effort.

Our team is made entirely of unpaid volunteers and we are so grateful for the amount of time and care they dedicate to helping protect wildlife. Ruth, one of our volunteer drivers, actually went and caught a jackdaw needing help in Peasedown St John whilst rescuers were tied up with the swan family.
