With you Wednesday

We had a brilliant evening on Monday over in Frome listening to on his tour of “To the ends of the Earth”. Big shout out by the way to all the volunteers at the theatre who make these events happen🙌

The talk was an honest overview of Simon Reeve’s life – the ups, the downs, the struggles - all told against the backdrop of the power of Nature to heal, to inspire, to make us grow. One of his go-to mantras is “Less screen, more green.”

Embracing the power of Nature is not a new phenomenon – it is however, if one is looking for resources for our family backpack – a constant source to tap into. Reeves spoke with real understanding about why he feels we all as humans, need to find our own “ends of the earth” and challenge ourselves. He rightly acknowledged that this is going to look different for everyone. He spoke about the power of taking small steps. Obstacles and struggles that we face can undoubtedly on occasion feel overwhelming. Being kind to ourselves whilst trying to recognize each small step is a powerful way of finding a path through.

“When in doubt, step outside”

Listening to Simon Reeve, I was reminded again and again, of issues we talk about with parents when they come to see us . Every family is different, each one faces different challenges. When we work together, we can find ways through – parenthood is not meant to be a journey that is walked alone.

If you’re looking for parenting support and you’re in Bath, come in and see us. If you’re not able to see us in person, remember that we work with parents all over the UK. Click the link in our bio and get in touch – we look forward to hearing from you🤗

With you Wednesday

Last week was a pretty surreal one for our family🤗

There was a big birthday with fabulous celebrations, there was the birth of a longed for baby, and we celebrated a wedding. We also had news that we hadn’t expected. To sum up, life happened. As L.R. Knost reminds us:

“Life is amazing. And then it’s awful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful, it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful.”

Parenting can feel like this. One minute we can feel as if we are smashing life, at other times it can feel as if we are on a roller coaster that we would like to get off! Having the right support in place can be a game changer. If you think parenting support could be what you are looking for, get in touch, we would love to be part of a support system that helps you celebrate the wonder of parenting as well as working with you to find a path through some of the trickier moments that you may not have anticipated. We look forward to hearing from you🥰

With you Wednesday

The Parent Collaborative is back in Bath after the Easter holidays, which obviously included amongst other things the ubiquitous Easter Egg Hunt!

We hope that you all had a good break and that your children have returned to school, or the home classroom, curious and eager to learn. We are certainly looking forward to what we have planned for this term as well as to working with others to ensure there is access to powerful parenting support in Bath.

As ever, please know that wherever you are on your parenting journey, we are here and ready to offer support in whatever ways you feel may be of help. There is no perfect child, no perfect parent, no one way to parent. The parenting journey is also an ever-changing landscape. Just when we think we are smashing one part of the journey, things change! We’ve been there – as parents ourselves as well as on the other side of the fence as teachers. If there’s something that you feel could be eased by looking at alternative ways of doing things, why not give us a ring? Click the link in our bio and get in touch! We look forward to hearing from you.

We are coming towards the end of the Spring term – chocolate beckons🤗

Before we sign off for the Spring holiday, we just wanted to give a big shout out to everyone in Bath who have continued to help and support us so far this year, as well as a huge thank you as always, to all those parents who have reached out over the past few months, both in Bath and around the UK – please know that working with you all has been a huge privilege.

We will be back in a few weeks’ time. In the meantime, we wish you all a very Happy Easter break.

Something that was apparent when we set out as teachers, and still stands out as being vital, is the need for parents to have a support network. To find their tribe, their way of doing things, what they want their family to look like.

This is why finding parenting support that works can be a game changer – the piece of the puzzle that was potentially missing. There is so much information, so much advice, so much noise out there. At The Parent Collaborative, we help dial down the noise. We listen to parents and to what it is that they are trying to put in place for their family. We don’t offer a quick fix, but support that can grow with them, support that they can take with them on their parenting journey. Every family is unique, every parent, every child. We do not ask parents to sign up to a one-size fits all “programme”. Our promise is that we will work with parents to find a way through that is right for their family. So, if you have been contemplating getting in touch, click the link in our bio and send us an email or give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you, and to being part of your support network.🥰

With You Wednesday

Out on a morning walk, got me thinking about the preparation we did last year for the 3 Peaks Challenge (raising money for the fantastic NPO “Let’s get our knickers in a twist”)

I love an analogy - perhaps getting fitted with a new pair of walking boots is a bit of a strange one when it comes to seeking out parenting support – but bear with😂

My main reason for seeking out a new pair of boots was due to an Achilles heel injury. In addition to a lot of physio and swimming, and on advice from the wonderful , I went along to in Bath.

They listened, they asked for necessary, additional information, scanned my feet (that bit we don’t do at The Parent Collaborative😂) and then gave me some choices of boot, not just for the challenge, but for the years ahead.

Knowledge, understanding, data and science underpin the whole procedure. Their aim is not to sell a "one-size fits all" perfect boot. What's more, I gained some invaluable advice about tying shoe laces - a small change that made a BIG difference.

Getting fitted out for a new pair of boots didn’t mean I had to learn how to walk again, nor did it mean that I had done anything wrong up to that point – rather it was an opportunity to implement some changes.

Teaching experience, the lived experience of being a parent, alongside therapeutic work with parents and children in a whole variety of settings, means that we have been fortunate enough to have benefited from the many, many educational pioneers, doctors and therapists who have come before us. A big part of our remit is to on pass this knowledge and understanding.

We are Bath based, but work with parents all over the UK. If you feel that your family unit could benefit from some parenting support, please get in touch. Working with parents is what we love to do.

With you Wednesday

Pausing, provides space. Space to respond rather than to react.

As a former Montessori teacher, pausing was an integral part of the daily routine, because pausing allowed space to observe what was going on for children in the group. Pausing, provides time to redirect if necessary, as well as opportunity for questioning and trying to understand what can be learned from a particular behaviour. Maria Montessori often spoke of the need for adults to pause – not only to learn about what is going on for children but also to check in with our own responses to a given situation.

The same goes for our own homes. Practising putting in a pause, allows us to parent intentionally. The space provided by a pause gives us time to try to work out what our children need from us in the moment – to ask ourselves where is the parenting WIN (What’s Important Now)?

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual – there is no “one-size fits all” approach. However, as educators, we are aware that there is a road map for child development which we know, understand and can help to explain. As much as there are clear paths through, there are also common pitfalls that can be avoided.

If you are looking for parenting support – be that on a 1:1 in person basis, remote support or support within a group setting, please do get in touch. You can do so by clicking on the link in our bio or checking out our website. We look forward to hearing from you and to meeting many more of you over the coming months.

Top Tips Tuesday

Moving away from how we used to post on Instagram was intentional. A big part of why we set up The Parent Collaborative was to provide parents with knowledge and understanding. Knowledge and understanding can help us when it comes to making decisions, and when it comes to parenting, to parent from an informed perspective. This is why we are slowly beginning to put more resources onto our website. Many of these resources are built up from the years of posting on Instagram! We hope that when parents are looking for support around a topic, even if they don’t come along to see us, they are still able to access information from the website ,which is set out in a way that provides insight and support.

One of the most important factors that allow children to thrive is the feeling of safety. Children need to feel safe to learn. This is why intentional parenting in the Early Years is so vital.

Our vision at The Parent Collaborative was that supporting parents would in turn allow them to support their children. Parents likewise need to feel safe in order that they can parent in the way that is right for their family unit.

The Parent Collaborative prides itself on offering the type of support to parents which allows them to feel safe, to trust in the “why” behind how they have decided to parent.

So – if you’re looking for parenting support – whatever that may look like, please know that we are here for you - no matter what is going on. We look forward to hearing from you🙌

Top Tips Tuesday

Good vs Bad – Right vs Wrong – "Normal vs Not Normal” – Easy vs Difficult ………….some of the many comparisons people make when it comes to parenting and children.

Language has such a huge capacity to help or to hinder. When parents come to see us at The Garden Apartment, or we are working with them remotely, one of our most important aims is to dispel the idea that they are failing, or that there is only one way to parent.

Our goal is to support parents, so that they can find a path through whatever they are dealing with – one that works for their individual family unit. Our promise is that we will listen to what is going on, rather than promising a one-size fits all solution.

It takes real courage to reach out for support – in whatever capacity. Yet when it comes to reaching out for parenting support, it seems the reluctance runs deep. There are many reasons for this. From the idea that parents are made to believe that they should just be able to figure things out for themselves, to feeling as if their family unit is broken and there isn’t a way to resolve it.

So, on , we remind you that investment in the Early Years is something that you will never regret. Knowledge and understanding of child development is empowering. Looking at issues from an alternative perspective can be helpful. Feeling confident about what and how we want our family set up to look like, means we feel prepared. Constructing and nailing down a structure, can help provide us with the foundations on which to build a strong, confident, positive family unit.

These are all things that we have been working on with families since we first set up in Bath. If you’re looking for parenting support, get in touch – we’d love to hear from you🙌

Top Tips Tuesday

Pressure to be The Perfect Parent seems to be ever present in society today. Yet, not only is perfection an illusion, it isn’t what our children want, or need us to be. Our children want our time and attention. If things don’t go according to plan, so what? When things turn out differently from how we expected (or didn’t turn out at all), that’s ok. These situations provide learning opportunities, or opportunities for laughter!

Chasing perfection in parenting (which doesn’t even exist remember) is exhausting for parents. There will always be something else we feel we should be doing with our children, always other families out there seemingly doing it better than our family unit.

Furthermore, chasing perfection potentially sets our children up for disappointment. If they don’t see us messing up, it can make them fearful of giving new things a go. It also doesn’t allow for them to witness and learn the power of an apology and making amends.

Good enough, rather than perfection, is a great place to be. If that means we stop measuring ourselves, stop comparing ourselves to others, and instead move to a place of acceptance of who we are, and importantly who are children are, things can feel lighter, calmer, more manageable.

So, on , here’s to parenting intentionally, parenting consciously, with kindness and respect, but moving away from thinking there is only way to parent and that everyone around us has got it sorted! Family life can be messy, tough, fun, a rollercoaster of emotions. One thing it is never going to be is the polished, curated version of family life that we are told is possible "If only we …….............."

Here’s to parents out there everywhere – you’ve got this🙌
