Where did our ‘Ma’ 馬 Surname begin?

The Ma surname comes from an old honorary title in ancient China. During the Warring States period (403–221 BC), a prince from the State of Zhao served as a cavalry general and became well known for his success in battle. Because of this, he was given the title Ma Fu, which means “Tamer of Horses.”

Later, his descendants took Ma from this title and used it as their family name. The Ma family’s ancestral roots are in present-day Shaanxi.

‘Ma’ can be used in auspicious phrases like “Ma Shang You Fu” (fortune arrives on horseback).

Happy Chinese New Year of the horse. Wishing all prosperity and good health in 2026! 🧧🧧🧧🐎🐎🐎
