“How stable is a piano tuning?
Even the best tuning gradually drifts as temperature and humidity shift the soundboard and strings. For most homes, two tunings a year is ideal; for performance venues, a concert grand may need fine adjustments before every event.

Keeping your piano in a consistent environment — away from radiators, sunlight, and draughts — dramatically improves tuning stability.

Do you schedule your tunings by the calendar or wait until it sounds off?”

🛠 Rebuild in Progress: Yamaha G2 for Monkton Combe Prep School 🎹

This Yamaha G2 grand has just arrived in the workshop from Monkton Combe Prep School in Bath, where I’ve proudly looked after the pianos for many years.

It’s in for a major internal reconstruction, including:

🔧 A brand new wrestplank
🎼 Full restringing
🎵 And beautifully rich hand-spun bass strings from The Deben Wire Company in Suffolk — crafted specifically for this piano.

This kind of work breathes new life into an instrument and ensures it will continue serving students and staff for many more years to come. Always a pleasure to support a school that values its instruments so highly.

More updates to follow as the work progresses — watch this space!

🎹 This Morning’s Concert Tuning — Bath Symphony Orchestra

It’s always a privilege to be a small but crucial piece of a big musical picture.

First thing this morning, I was up at Wiltshire Music Centre to prepare their Steinway Model D for tonight’s sell-out Bath Symphony Orchestra concert.

The piano was already in wonderful form — it was performed on last night by Cordelia Williams — but after two careful tunings yesterday, I made sure everything was perfectly settled for tonight’s performance.

While I’m back in the workshop now, it’s a real pleasure to know that this wonderful piano is helping bring great orchestral and piano artistry to a full and enthusiastic crowd.

🎹 A busy day of piano tunings!

Started off this morning at Wiltshire Music Centre, getting their Steinway ready for tonight’s concert — always a pleasure to work there.

Then I headed over to Millfield School for a few more tunings, making sure everything’s pitch-perfect for their students’ practice sessions.

After that, it was a trip to St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells to prepare for Sunday’s performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute. The church’s acoustics really bring the magic alive — I’m looking forward to that!

Finally, I made my way back to Wiltshire Music Centre for a last-minute check-up and fine-tuning before the doors opened this evening.

It’s been a full-on day, but a rewarding one — there’s something really special about keeping pianos sounding their best for both the players and the audiences.

A Note About Bookings – Please Read

Firstly, thank you so much to all my loyal customers, old and new, for your continued support. I want to offer a sincere apology to anyone who’s had difficulty getting a booking recently.

I’ve taken on a huge wave of new work following the sad passing of two respected local tuners. As a result, I’ve inherited a lot of new customers and contracts — many of which were urgent — and the diary has filled up fast. What’s normally a 6–8 week wait is now stretching into October in some cases.

I understand this is frustrating, especially for long-standing clients, and I’m truly sorry to those who feel let down. I’m doing my best to keep up, but I’m only one tuner — and my brilliant admin team consists of just my wife, who’s doing an incredible job under a mountain of messages!

We’re both working hard to keep things running smoothly, prioritise urgent cases, and make space where we can. I hugely appreciate everyone who’s chosen to stick with me during this time. Your patience and loyalty really do mean the world.

Thank you for bearing with us,
Mark and Bex
