The thick black outlines and bold colours in Patrick Caulfield's 'Pottery' are characteristic of much of the artist's paintings. He said that this work in particular 'was an excuse for me to use a lot of colour'. 🎨🎨🎨

Gwen John, Chloë Boughton-Leigh 1904–8.

This small portrait by Gwen John depicts Ellen Theodosia Boughton-Leigh (known to family and friends as Chloë), sitting lost in thought. John's biographer commented that ‘the portrait has a quality of intimate informality; it is a subjective interpretation of her sitter, suggesting unpretentiousness, gentleness and hinting at reciprocal warmth.’
