Roger Maxwell Penny 1938-2026
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our founder, Mr Roger Maxwell Penny.
What began with some pigs, an old tractor and an incredible amount of grit, courage and belief grew into the business that Pennys Group is today. Through decades of hard work and perseverance, Roger built a business that was his life's work, leaving a legacy that will continue for generations to come.
Everything Pennys Group has achieved is rooted in the foundations Roger laid. His values of honesty, loyalty, hard work and looking after people remain at the heart of everything we do and will continue to guide us for many years to come.
Roger's commitment to the business was matched only by his devotion to his family. While he dedicated himself to growing the company, Catherine, his wife of 65 years, dedicated herself to raising their family, allowing Roger to pursue his ambitions with complete focus. He made countless sacrifices throughout his life to provide for those he loved, building a successful business that his family can be immensely proud of.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Roger will remember a man of strength, humility and kindness. He earned the respect of so many people throughout his life, not simply because of what he accomplished, but because of the way he treated others. He will be remembered for his shrewd approach to business, fairness, honesty and no-nonsense outlook on life. Despite his success, he always remained grounded and never lost sight of where he came from.
Roger leaves behind his beloved wife, Catherine, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and many lifelong friends, all of whom will miss him beyond words. His influence also reached far beyond his family, touching the lives of employees, customers, suppliers and the wider community.
While we mourn the loss of an extraordinary man, we also celebrate a life lived with purpose, determination and love. His name and the values he stood for will always remain part of Pennys Group.
Our thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with Catherine, his family and everyone across Pennys Group as they navigate this heartbreaking time.
