Justice Focus

Justice Focus Justice Focus highlights the realities of criminal justice systems throughout the world & focuses on efforts for justice reform.

PODCAST - CONSULTANCY - RESEARCH There are currently more than 10.5 million people imprisoned across the world and since the year 2000, the global prison population has been rising faster than the growth of the world's general population.*

Overburdened criminal justice systems have led to overcrowding, inhumane conditions and long-term damaging effects for individuals, their families and society.

Sentences are often disproportionate and prison becomes a damaging, rather than a rehabilitative experience. Justice Focus works to highlight the realities of justice systems across the world - often hidden from public consciousness.

We outline the initial ‘just war’ narratives used during Portuguese colonisation and the actions taken by Brazilian elites to justify the maintenance of slavery and continued subjugation of the descendants of the victims of slavery into the 20th century.

We consider Latin American criminology's focus on criminal anthropology and complicity in social Darwinism and eugenics. In doing so, we illustrate the through-line of an emphasis on the rhetoric of war.
