Hi all, hopefully you will find this post informative.
I decided to see how two similar sized pieces of softwood/hardwood compared side by side whilst being burnt.
Here we have a hardwood Ash log on the left and a marginally smaller piece or softwood Spruce on the right, Ash is regarded as one of the best hardwood logs and likewise the Spruce is one of the better softwoods so it is an interesting test. Both were seasoned for a similar time.
The first thing I noticed was the softwood got going much faster giving off a good heat, after this you can see the logs lasted for a similar time, with the Ash log lasting a little longer. Other than opening the doors the log burner had the vents opened up around 1/4.
So in conclusion Hardwood is not necessarily the best option.
If you are looking for quick heat of an evening a mixed load of softwood and hardwood is most likely the best option for a log burner.
Happy burning from us at TT FIREWOOD.
