Don’t let your back-to-school snap lead to a hack!
After an extended break, the official summer holidays is coming to an end. The excitement of back to school time is starting to swell.
Day 1 sees parents and carers with cameras fully charged ready to take all those fun ‘beginning of the year’ photos. Snap away, but before you share we want to remind you which ones are best kept to yourself.
Most people are good. But there’s a few who use those photos to exploit us. Here’s a checklist to help out. The ones that don’t conform keep strictly for your own photo albums and memory books.
Photos That Show Your House Number
Many people in your social network know exactly where you live. But, photos don’t just stay on Facebook and Instagram, they also make their way to Google and Pinterest and all over the internet. Those pictures can move fast and get shared widely. You never, ever want your kid’s picture with their address on it roaming the world wide web.
Photos That Show Your Child’s School
This is any photo that shows people where your child goes to school.
Again, do all your friends know already? Yep, but the rest of the world doesn’t.
This includes:
the sign on the front of the building
school notebook or folder
school PE bag / book bag / swim bag
badge
t-shirt
flyer
yearbook
Photos With Other Peoples’ Children In Them
This is tricky sometimes, we get it. But the question you want to ask yourself is ‘do you want other people posting photos of your children online?’ I’m not referring to friends and family, heck they do that all the time and it’s fine. I mean people you don’t know and are not friends with. If there is a clearly identified child that you don’t know personally, don’t post it online. Blurred children in the background are OK.
So take as many photos as your heart desires, the first day of school is so exciting! Just remember to take a little precaution IF you can’t resist posting them online.
One More School Safety Tip
For the little ones, don’t put their name on the back pack or big and bold on their water bottle! Only an initial.
