Chapel circa 1658 Lathwork
๐ก The History of Lathwork in Timber Buildings
Lathwork has been used for centuries as the supporting framework for lime render on timber-framed buildings. Early examples appear in medieval England (c. 1100), becoming widespread in Tudor times (1485โ1603). Thin timber strips were fixed horizontally with small gaps, allowing the render to key through and form a strong, flexible bond with the structure.
To prevent cracking, laths were traditionally staggered every eight lengths, breaking joint lines and relieving stress.
This method remained standard in the UK into the 19th century and is still essential today for restoring historic timber buildings with lime render.
Thereโs real pride in knowing your work could still be admired 400 years from now.
