NEWS | Career Connect calls on employers to help unlock opportunities for care experienced young people.

Responsible business network Business in the Community Northern Ireland and Include Youth have announced the launch of Career Connect, a new collaborative project inviting businesses across Northern Ireland to play a practical role in improving employment opportunities and outcomes for care experienced young people.

The initiative – supported by a grant from the Homewards Fund in Northern Ireland – responds to growing inequality faced by young people leaving care, who experience significantly higher levels of unemployment and barriers affecting long-term prospects. Through a structured five step programme, Career Connect will support 40–50 care experienced young people to build confidence, develop employability skills and make direct connections with employers, and ultimately aiming to secure a job.

Participating businesses can choose how they get involved – from supporting a one-hour employability session, to taking part in speed networking events, hosting work experience placements or contributing to the Career Connect LinkedIn community. All participating organisations receive support, profile throughout the life of the project and access to training to help ensure experiences are trauma informed and meaningful.

There is no financial cost for businesses to participate, and employers are encouraged to register early to secure places to be part of this life-changing collaboration.

NEWS | Business in the Community Northern Ireland and Business in the Community Ireland have joined forces to launch Cross Border Careers, a new initiative connecting young people in border communities with local employers.

Funded through the Shared Island Civic Society Fund, the programme will support 16–18-year-olds across Armagh, Monaghan, Fermanagh, Cavan, Tyrone and Donegal and offers local career insight, employer connections and visible pathways into work that are closer to home.

Thank you to Combilift and Kingspan, who are on board to host workplace visits in the coming months.

NEWS | A new partnership between Business in the Community Northern Ireland (BITC) and The King's Trust will help young people in Northern Ireland take the next step on their career journey by building confidence, digital literacy and employability skills aligned to the needs of employers.

The collaboration will become part of The King’s Trust’s Get Ready For suite of programmes which are designed to inspire and support young people aged 16 to 30 to progress towards education, training or employment.

This new Get Ready for a Career using AI will be championed by professional services firm EY who will provide participants with access to its AI Skills Passport, helping young people understand the opportunities, language and practical applications of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

The agreement between The King’s Trust and Business in the Community marks an important milestone, with Northern Ireland becoming the first region in the UK where the two organisations have established a working agreement focused on supporting young people into work.

NEWS | Seeing is Believing visit highlights the business role in protecting and restoring nature and biodiversity.

Senior business leaders from across Northern Ireland took part in a Business in the Community Seeing is Believing visit this week to explore how businesses can help protect and restore nature and biodiversity.

The full-day visit, led by Joe O’Neill, CEO of Belfast Harbour, took delegates to Belfast Harbour, Lough Neagh and Northstone’s Craigantlet quarry. The programme was designed to help leaders see first-hand the pressures facing nature in Northern Ireland, hear directly from organisations working on practical restoration, and reflect on what this means for their own organisations.

Northern Ireland is recognised as one of the most nature-depleted regions in the world. The evidence is stark: 12% of assessed species are threatened with extinction, farmland bird numbers have fallen by 43% since 1996, the distribution of 891 flowering plant species has declined by 14% since 1970, and there has been no improvement in river ecological status since 2015.

Joe O’Neill, CEO of Belfast Harbour, said: "At Belfast Harbour, we believe environmental leadership and commercial success go hand in hand. Today’s event focused on nature and biodiversity, and we are already delivering nature-based solutions across the Harbour Estate. This leadership is recognised by achieving the BITC Biodiversity Charter at Platinum level for 5 years. We are currently working with Ulster Wildlife Trust on a third estate wide assessment of our biodiversity assets, dependencies and pressures to inform our strategic initiatives in this important area.

“The value of bringing leaders together to share knowledge, learn from real-world experience and inspire action was evident today. We hope the insights shared today will help organisations across NI accelerate their own efforts to protect biodiversity, reduce emissions and build a more sustainable future.”
