Favourite gadgets post

I’ve been using dryer balls for many years and find they reduce drying time and take creases out of the clothes. Altogether efficient and energy saving!

I’ve also found them in packets unused in a few homes. Pop them in and use them, especially since we have such poor clothes drying weather in Ireland / NI.

I most often finish off the clothes in the dryer since it’s such a costly machine to run. Line drying - often rushing out to rescue clothes from another shower - or rack drying is my preferred method and finishing them in the dryer with the spiky or wool balls. My in- house ironer then does the rest while watching football!

Surprised to find these all on the floor instead of in the dryer - my recent guests must not have been impressed by them!

Sometimes people leave things too late. Having too much stuff is even more overwhelming when you become unwell or frail.

Do we prepare ourselves for the later stages of life? Can we recognise when a ‘season of life’ is over? If we can’t see or can’t hold our stitching crafts, then it’s time to pass them on to someone else.

If we haven’t cooked for a crowd in many years, then it’s time to pass on the large bowls and dinner service, so that others can use them. Maybe people you don’t know - because your family have chosen their own preferred delft, china, furniture or bedding.

Swedish Death Cleaning is a way of life and a practice of ageing Swedes- this term is not ‘lost in translation’ - but a recognition and acceptance that life has moved on and you can choose where things go that you no longer need.

Will I be able to do that too?

Sad that a potential client who booked me twice and cancelled, has died. I never got to meet her.

This amazing lady is Norwegian and has been living in Luxembourg for 11 years, reaching students with the good news of Jesus. Gunn Elin had to learn French first, then Luxembourgish - which is impressive.

She is swamped with stuff she keeps and now has to reduce it all to move back to Norway.
I’ve helped her in the past with receipts and expenses and this week she was asking for advice about what to keep and what to throw out.

A big move is sometimes the push we need to have a clear out.

But some people leave it too late and have called me in but cancelled due to ill health and overwhelm.

I enjoy doing puzzles of various kinds - mostly on my phone.

Recently this Sequence seemed to fit with clutter. If you CLING to stuff for various reasons, then you HOARD maybe even keeping stuff on the STAIRs ….. it can all get messy and dangerous! It will take VALOR and courage to face up to the problem!

Don’t ignore it by doing more puzzles or watching more TV or doomscrolling - get to it. Do a little at a time and if you can’t face it alone, call in Sorted by Gwen

Most homes don’t have a minimalist look or layout. Especially not the ones I get called to!

I remember a client moving and downsizing. When just a few boxes had been unpacked, her treasures looked great with room ‘for the butterflies’. Each had enough space around them to be enjoyed, unlike when a display case is packed with so many memory-inducing bits and bobs.

Did you know that one of the unique features of Sorted by Gwen is that I take away the things that clients have decluttered?

Whether it’s to a charity shop or the recycling centre / dump, my 4x4 takes quite a lot. I recycle where I can

No one in the family can rescue what’s been decluttered and the client has already decided to let each item go. So go it does, in the back of my car!

These are the kind of call outs in many homes. Things may have a home, an expected place to be but they have been moved. Even for those living alone, things migrate and aren’t where they should be.

When working with clients I try to establish ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. Although I work alongside clients, sometimes they can’t find things.

Today was one of those days.
TWO texts - ´Do you know where such-and-such is?’ ´Did you see the thingamyjig when you were here?’

Single use plastics

Reusable bags

My eco friends and I wash and reuse bags like these resealable ones - and others too. Plastic is great but it will be around for a long long time, so it’s good to find alternatives ( like Tupperware boxes or waxed wrappers).

If you keep more of anything than you use up then there will be clutter. Too many is wasteful too.

Recently my client decided to use a much smaller container to store them in and get rid of a pile of them. Best option in this case.

Reuse recycle ♻️ look for sustainable alternatives
