I've been riding for about 10 years now and I picked up a new Triumph Scrambler a few weeks ago. My dream bike.

There's something about being out on the road, helmet on, no notifications, no emails, that clears your head like nothing else does.

It's my thing. Always has been.

Everyone needs a thing.

Something that pulls you completely out of the work headspace and puts you somewhere else entirely. It doesn't have to be a motorbike. A run. A garden. A round of golf. Whatever it is for you.

The business owners and managers I work with are some of the hardest working people I know. But the ones who perform best long-term are the ones who've figured out how to properly switch off.

So whatever your thing is, make time for it this summer.

And if HR is the reason you can't switch off, give People HQ a call.

That part we can sort out. 😄🏍️

I was recently asked what my WHY is.

I could have answered with a simple one-liner. But the truth is, my WHY started a long time before I ever realised it.

There’s an old saying that the two most important days in your life are the day you are born… and the day you discover why.

I grew up on a council estate in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, the eldest of five kids.

As the eldest, I naturally took on responsibility early. Looking after my younger siblings became part of everyday life — so much so that my youngest sister called me daddy as a baby.

We didn’t have much, but we had something that mattered more — community. Neighbours looked out for each other. People showed up. People mattered.

Looking back now, I think that’s where my WHY began.

Over 20+ years working across HR, retail, hospitality and FMCG, one thing has stayed constant:

It was never really about policy.
Never about process.
Always about people.

Helping people grow.
Helping businesses create places where people thrive.
Helping leaders realise that culture isn’t written — it’s lived.

Today I own a business called People HQ.

And when I think about that old saying, maybe I’ve already found my answer.

People.

What’s your WHY?

When a business needs to hire quickly and hire well, a recruitment open day is one of the most effective tools available.
It brings candidates to you.

It lets you showcase your workplace, your culture, and your people. And it gives candidates a real feel for what working with you looks like, before either party commits.

People HQ supports NI employers to plan, promote and deliver recruitment open days that attract the right candidates and represent your employer brand properly.

From the social media campaign to the candidate journey on the day itself, we handle the detail so you can focus on meeting your future team.

If you're facing a recruitment challenge and wondering where to start, a well-run open day might be exactly the answer.

Growing up in Strabane in the 1980s, work meant everything.

I was the eldest of five kids and learned early what responsibility looked like. Looking out for others, showing up, getting on with it and doing what needed done weren’t lessons — they were just part of everyday life.

That never left me.

So when I think about what we’re doing now, helping Filipino workers find secure, supported employment opportunities here on the island of Ireland, it doesn’t feel like a business service.

It feels personal.

These are people willing to travel thousands of miles for an opportunity. People prepared to work hard, create stability and build a better future for the people who matter to them.

I understand that mindset.

My WHY has always been about people.

Creating opportunities. Supporting growth. Helping good people find good businesses.

This is just people — in a different part of the world.

Before recruiting internationally, there are a few questions you need to consider.

Are you Home Office-approved as a Skilled Worker sponsor, or ready to apply?

Do your roles meet the salary and skills criteria for the Skilled Worker visa route?

Do you have a plan for accommodation, onboarding and pastoral support once workers arrive?

Is your existing team prepared for a more diverse workplace?
If you answered yes to all of the above then you're in a strong position to move forward.

If some of those feel uncertain, that's exactly what People HQ is here for.

We work with employers across Ireland in agri, food and FMCG to get recruitment-ready, navigate the legal requirements, and build a properly supported pathway for workers coming from the Philippines.

The conversation starts with a call.

Agri, food and FMCG sectors are the backbone of our economy.
They're also some of the hardest sectors to recruit for right now.

Production roles, food processing, packing, dispatch, the local talent pool simply isn't keeping pace with demand. Businesses that can't fill their teams can't fulfil their orders.

The Philippines has a large, English-speaking workforce with strong experience in farming, food production and manufacturing sctors. Workers who are motivated, skilled and looking for long-term opportunities.

People HQ now offers a fully supported Philippines recruitment pathway, tailored specifically for employers in agri, food and FMCG.

If your business is struggling to hire and you're open to exploring a different approach, get in touch with us for a confidential chat about how we can help.

Recruiting from the Philippines is becoming an increasingly practical option for employers across Ireland who are struggling to fill vacancies and secure the right skills.

But there’s a process to follow, and getting it wrong can cost time, money and create unnecessary headaches.

A few things employers should think about:
✅ Understanding the relevant immigration and employment requirements
✅ Making sure roles meet the necessary criteria
✅ Planning properly for onboarding and supporting people once they arrive
✅ Getting good advice early to avoid delays and issues later

People HQ works alongside experienced associates in the Philippines to support employers through the recruitment journey — helping make the process clearer and easier to manage from start to finish.

If you operate in Agri, FMCG or Manufacturing and are finding it difficult to attract and retain the people you need, and would like to explore whether international recruitment could work for your business, get in touch for a confidential conversation.

We are so excited to announce that we're working with an experienced team of associates in the Philippines to help connect skilled Filipino workers with employers here in Ireland.

Our agri, food and FMCG sectors are facing real workforce challenges.

Good people are hard to find locally. Meanwhile, there are highly skilled, motivated workers in the Philippines looking for exactly the kind of opportunities our employers have to offer.

Over the past year, we've been working on building an ethical, legal and people-first pathway to connect employers across Ireland and workers from the Philippines.

Over the coming weeks I'll be sharing more about how it works, who's involved, and what it means for employers.
