Avondale Foods is one of the UK's leading fresh food manufacturers, supplying household names including Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Dunnes Stores.

You'll become the trusted expert responsible for sourcing and securing the raw ingredients that keep production moving—from lettuce, cabbage, potatoes and onions through to flour and other key agricultural commodities.

Working closely with growers, suppliers, production and technical teams, you'll ensure continuity of supply while balancing quality, cost, sustainability and seasonal availability.

This is a highly visible role where your decisions directly influence production planning, customer delivery and business performance.

⋆ Building long-term partnerships with growers and produce suppliers.
⋆ Planning crop availability from planting through to harvest.
⋆ Negotiating commercial agreements and securing the best value.
⋆ Identifying new suppliers and developing supply resilience.
⋆ Monitoring market trends, weather impacts and seasonal risks.
⋆ Supporting production with accurate forecasting and stock planning.
⋆ Working alongside Technical and Operations teams to maintain the highest food safety and quality standards.
⋆ Contributing to strategic procurement projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

⋆ A strong background in Agronomy, Agriculture, Horticulture, Fresh Produce or Produce Procurement.
⋆ Experience managing relationships with growers or agricultural suppliers.
⋆ Commercial awareness with excellent negotiation skills.
⋆ A passion for agriculture and the fresh produce industry.
⋆ Strong planning, forecasting and organisational ability.
⋆ The confidence to make decisions and solve problems in a fast-moving environment.
⋆ Degree level education (or equivalent experience) within a relevant discipline would be advantageous.

One thing has never changed for me.

Spent a great day recently running a DiSC workshop with the team at ACE Vets. 🐾

DiSC looks at how people communicate, make decisions and work under pressure, and once a team can see their own styles (and each other's) on paper, a lot of "why does X always do that" moments start making sense.

By the end of the workshop, every clinical team had developed a clearer understanding of their strengths, where they could work together more effectively, and practical actions they could take to strengthen collaboration. Just as importantly, everyone left with a greater understanding of themselves and the people they work alongside every day.

Team development isn't just for the big corporates. Any team that works closely together benefits from understanding how everyone's wired.

Before I ever worked in HR, I worked for someone who got it badly wrong.

I won't go into detail, but it was enough to make me decide: if I ever had the chance to do this properly, I would.

So I trained. Part-time, for eight-plus years, while working full-time and raising a young family. Not because I loved studying, because I'd seen what bad management does to people, and I wanted to be able to do better.

Twenty five years and a few sectors later, that's still the reason I do this.

If you've ever had a manager who got it wrong, you already know why good HR matters.
