Good to see, Jack, our youngest member, highlighted in the Pride in the seas.
At just 22, Jack Grieve is already shaping his own place within Scotland’s fishing industry.
Based in Eyemouth, Jack is skipper of the Janreen, a vessel he restored almost entirely himself. With no family background in fishing, his route into the industry came through curiosity, hard work and a determination to learn - from early nights accompanying his grandfather at the harbour, to fast-tracking safety courses and working his way up to skipper.
Today, Jack runs the Janreen with a small crew, landing locally and supporting the wider supply chain that keeps fishing communities like Eyemouth thriving. His journey hasn’t been easy, from constant mechanical breakdowns to the financial strain of bringing an old vessel back to life, but his pride in what he’s built is clear.
What drives Jack most is the future. He’s passionate about helping more young people get into fishing, actively giving others the opportunity to gain experience, qualifications and confidence at sea. He’s even taken on another fixer-upper boat, with the aim of creating a pathway for the next generation to get started.
Like many skippers, Jack is concerned about shrinking fishing space and the growing barriers facing newcomers to the industry. Still, his commitment to learning, mentoring and perseverance captures exactly what Pride in the Seas 2 is about.
