🦔 HAPPY NATIONAL MOLE DAY 2026!
Although it’s not ‘that kind of mole’ - today, 23rd October, we’re still shining a spotlight on one of the UK’s most misunderstood garden visitors!
What do moles actually do?
Moles are skilled underground diggers that help aerate the soil and feed on earthworms, insect larvae and other soil-dwelling invertebrates. They play a natural role in the ecosystem, but that doesn’t mean they’re always welcome in our gardens!
Why can moles become a problem?
Although they don’t eat plant roots, their extensive tunnelling can cause problems for homeowners and gardeners, including:
Lawn damage: Unsightly molehills can spoil lawns, flower beds and landscaped areas.
Ground disruption: Tunnels can disturb plant roots and leave areas of soil uneven.
Maintenance headaches: Molehills can interfere with lawn mowing and make keeping your garden looking its best a challenge.
Can be dangerous to livestock: Livestock can be put at risk with an increased chance of listeria contamination from the bacteria that is brought to the surface from the soil below.
