If our friend was upset, we’d sit with them, support them, hold space.
So why do so many believe children should be ignored when their emotions feel too big?

Children don’t need to be “left to deal with it.”
They need co-regulation — an adult who shares their calm when they can’t find their own.

Co-regulation isn’t rescuing or giving in.
It’s offering warmth, modelling coping, and guiding them through the overwhelm so they can learn to understand and express their feelings in healthy ways.

Simple to say… not always simple to do.
Especially when their meltdown triggers your own nervous system.
But connection teaches skills that isolation never will.

Gonadarche marks the biological beginning of puberty — when the te**es start to mature and produce testosterone. For most boys, this happens between ages 9 and 14.

Alongside physical changes, this stage can bring surges in energy, irritability, sensitivity, or confusion — all signs that the brain and body are adjusting to new hormone patterns.
Supporting emotional regulation through these shifts helps boys feel grounded and understood as they grow.

There’s a separate post for girls — as their timeline and hormonal changes begin earlier.

Explore our Managing Big Feelings Toolkit for practical ways to guide emotional regulation through puberty and beyond. Link in comments below ⬇️ or via our Linktree Shop in Bio.
