Following October's Scramble, many of you have got in touch about the changes to the event, particularly the removal of our dedicated Pre-2001 and Performance & Supercar parking. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views with us. The strength of the response shows just how much the Scramble means to our community.

The changes introduced for October formed part of our preparations for Martyn’s Law, formally the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. The legislation brings new security requirements for qualifying premises and public events nationwide, and we have a responsibility to ensure the Scramble meets the requirements that apply to events of this scale.

That means looking carefully at how our events operate, including the safe movement and management of people and vehicles across our site. But we also know that meeting those responsibilities should not mean losing the character and atmosphere that make the Scramble so special, or detracting from the experience that you have come to know and value.

Your feedback has been clear, and we have listened. Our dedicated pre-2001 and Performance & Supercar parking areas will return for our 2027 Scrambles. We’re working behind the scenes to make that happen while meeting our responsibilities under Martyn’s Law and preserving the eclectic mix of machinery, people and specialist businesses that makes a day at Bicester Motion unlike anywhere else.

Thank you for your passion, your feedback and, most importantly, for being part of the Scramble community. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2027.

It is only when seen together, and from a distance, that the scale of the Type A and Type C hangars truly hit home. Not least the difference between the two.

During the RAF’s expansion period from 1935 the decade-old Type As had become secondary, despite being 20-25ft high to the top of the door. The new Type Cs added half as much again – a comparison best seen from the air. Or perhaps from the track, when TeamSport’s split-level karting venue opens.

In the mid-1930s, the new Blenheim bomber was three metres longer and wider than the aeroplane it replaced; the Halifax a further four. The space was evidently required.

Bicester had quickly become the go-to place for the Blenheim, too, with the prototype spending weeks being pored over by trainees before the production ’plane arrived in earnest.

The prototype Halifax was soon to arrive under a veil of secrecy, disassembled at the Handley Page factory to be reassembled in the Type A Hangar 79 of RAF Bicester. It squeezed its way through the massive door, barely 10ft spare either side of the wings, onto the airfield and into the sky with Major ‘Jim’ Cortes at the controls.

Satisfied, the Handley Page team packed up and more than 6000 were eventually built, 1500 more than Bicester’s Bristol Blenheim.

Hangar 137, meanwhile, would later play its own part in the story of another giant of the sky.

January Scramble tickets are on general sale!

2027 kicks off at Bicester Motion on Sunday 10 January and the Orchard Lawn will honour the little machines that go large: the three-door off-roader.

Think Land Rovers new and old, original Discovery and Range Rovers, too, plus plenty more from Japan.

A raft of other celebrations will scatter across the Technical Site of Bicester Motion and out onto the flying field, including Goodwin’s Green and Pillbox. Online auction partner Bring a Trailer will be back and the eclectic cars of the Scramblers membership will line the avenues in their hundreds. The industry leading specialists based at Bicester Motion will lay on their own displays, featuring cars new, old and unreleased.

Don't miss these changes to arriving at the Scramble on Sunday! 🅿️

On Sunday, tickets won't be checked at the car park entrance. Instead you'll be guided straight into parking to then walk to the nearest entry gate to have your ticket scanned. The event opens at 9am.

Please follow the yellow event signage and P parking signs on approach. Wearescramblers Scramblers+ members should follow the green signs for priority parking.

Ticket checkpoints will be spread across the site: one is near Gate 3 for Scramblers+ priority parking, another is at the new Pillbox display area, a third is close to the Watch Office and there's a fourth for pedestrians only at Gate 8. We're also opening Gate 7 on Skimmingdish Lane, towards Launton Road, for public use for the first time.

Why the change? Moving ticket checks away from the roads should ease traffic flow, both on site and locally, and reduce disruption for our neighbours. It also reflects visitor feedback from April's Scramble and supports the security requirements of Martyn's Law for large-scale events, coming into effect soon.

The Parachute Store stands out on any Second World War Royal Air Force base, whether walking down Western Avenue of the former RAF Bicester, through the heart of the museum at RAF Hendon or another former base elsewhere. And when you know, you know it anywhere.

What gives it away is the dormer window that runs half the length of its pitched roof, adding a few extra feet to the very highest point in the ceiling. It is a simple but very effective solution to what could be a long problem: how do you dry a parachute in the most efficient space?

It doesn’t stretch from gable to gable, and for good reason. Having a porch-of-sorts helped to create a buffer from the dirt and dust floating around outside, which could undo all that hard work cleaning the parachutes inside.

Teams of packers would carefully check and fold the cleaned parachutes on a long table inside. The technology was relatively new, having been introduced in the First World War and parachuting remained an emergency procedure, rather than tactical, into the Second World War. The paratroopers emerged in June 1940, just after the Phoney War had ended. Building 92, meanwhile, was built in the first throes of RAF Bicester, in 1926, and celebrates its centenary this year.

In 2013, when the site was purchased, the raised roof was protected by tarpaulin. Today, having been restored in the earliest phase, it stands proud as a monument to its purpose.

To the rear is an office, which didn’t need the extra height, and which has a round window like something out of a church. Possibly that window was why, after flying stopped at RAF Bicester in 1945, that was exactly what the building became for a time.

When The Road Rat occupied the Parachute Store, the full-width glass partition wall was the base onto which each magazine issue came together. Each page and each feature would be attached, allowing the team to see the flow of each edition.

Born of the USA 🇺🇸

The new Goodwin’s Green will turn all red, white and blue at the sold-out October Scramble to celebrate the best Americana on offer to mark 250 years of America.

It’s more than a token gesture, because the former RAF Bicester has strong American links. Hangar 108, which casts its long shadow over the green, was home to the USAF in the early 1990s and used for storage as far back as 1978.

Expect Jeeps, Mustangs, and more on the lawn named after the final Station Commander.

Orchard Lawn throws it back to '76 🕺

The Orchard Lawn is turning the clock back 50 years to 1976 at the sold out October Scramble, with the year’s newest, fastest and bestselling cars coming together at the heart of the venue.

RAF Bicester closed that March, by which point Mercedes-Benz had launched the W123, BMW had released the E24 6 Series coupé and Porsche had revealed the 924, a new four-cylinder-engined sports car...

The trio is joined by a Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1, shown in 1975 but produced from mid-’76. VW briefly brought the Trekker, known in America as the Thing, to the country over the same period, too.

More exciting offerings appeared from Italy later in the year. Ferrari replaced the 365 GT4 with the 512BB, which could supposedly hit 188mph, and the car on Orchard Lawn was the first to be seen in the UK. It was on the stand at the Earls Court Motor Show in October. It is joined in the display by one of the rarest Lamborghinis, a Silhouette. Just 52 were made, only two of which are in the UK. There’s a similarly rare Maserati, a Kyalami, one of just 210, and both the Maser and Lamborghini were first seen at Geneva in 1976.

Ford provided the year’s best-selling car, when more than 130,000 people took home an Es**rt Mk2, and Rover took on a new look when it revealed the SD1, taking the wraps off at Chateau Impney that summer. Aston Martin shocked the world with its ultra-wedge Lagonda, which had followed a lead set by the new Lotus Esprit and which was finally being delivered.

On track, James Hunt and Barry Sheene ruled, represented by a surprising duo. When Hollywood relived Hunt’s incredible title with Rush, they couldn’t risk the priceless M23, so usable replicas were created. Two were built, one of which is taking another star turn. Nearby is a Suzuki that the Japanese marque gave Barry Sheene in 1979, and he used the LJ80 more often than even they would have anticipated. It was a paddock vehicle, then a farm hack, and today lives in Suzuki’s heritage collection.
