By 1878, the winery was being celebrated in a closed wine tasting at the Paris World Expo. French experts were impressed by the dry wine with an intense ruby color. They were sure that it was a new Bordeaux wine, but were surprised to later discover that the wine had originated in a small village on the banks of the Dniester River. Thus, the Negru de Purcari wine won its first gold medal at an international exhibition.

For a long time, Purcari wines were as popular as Bordeaux or Burgundy wines. The wine was served to Emperor Nicholas II as well as King George V and Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

Learn about Moldovan Wine history.

- Moldova has one of the oldest continuous winemaking traditions in Europe, stretching back more than 5,000 years. Wine is deeply tied to the country’s culture, economy, and identity.
- Ancient Origins (3000–1000 BCE). Archaeological evidence shows grape cultivation in the region as early as 3000 BCE. The fertile soil and mild continental climate made the area ideal for viticulture. Thracian tribes were among the first to cultivate vines, followed later by Greek and Roman influences that introduced improved winemaking techniques.
- Medieval Period (14th–18th Century). During the Principality of Moldavia, wine production expanded significantly. Monasteries played a key role in preserving vine varieties and refining production methods. Moldovan rulers encouraged vineyards, and wine became a major export to neighbour regions including Poland, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire.
- Russian Empire Influence (1812–1917). After Bessarabia (modern Moldova) became part of the Russian Empire, winemaking modernized. French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay were introduced. Large estates and underground cellars were developed, laying the groundwork for industrial-scale production.
- Soviet Era (1940–1991). Under Soviet rule, Moldova became the primary wine supplier of the USSR, producing about 25% of all Soviet wine at its peak. Production focused on volume rather than quality. The 1985 Soviet anti-alcohol campaign severely damaged vineyards, with many vines destroyed and wineries closed.
- Post-Independence Revival. After independence in 1991, Moldova shifted toward quality-focused winemaking.
- After the Russian embargo (2006 and 2013), Moldova transformed its wine industry by focusing on quality, modernization, and export diversification. Producers adopted EU standards, invested in new technology, and revived native grape varieties. This shift led to growing global recognition, with Moldovan wines winning international awards and entering major markets such as the EU, China, Japan, and the USA, strengthening Moldova’s reputation as an emerging premium wine producer.
- Producers revived indigenous grapes such as: Fetească Albă, Fetească Neagră, Rară Neagră, Viorica.
- Interested fact: Milestii Mici — holder of the world’s largest wine collection.

Benefits of Moderate Red Wine

When enjoyed in moderation, red wine may offer several health benefits thanks to its natural compounds, especially antioxidants like resveratrol and flavonoids.

Key Benefits:

•Supports Heart Health: Red wine can help raise “good” HDL cholesterol and protect blood vessels from damage.

•Rich in Antioxidants: These help fight oxidative stress and reduce inflammation in the body.

•May Improve Blood Sugar Control: Moderate intake has been linked to better insulin sensitivity.

•Supports Brain Health: Some compounds may help protect brain cells and support memory.

•Promotes Relaxation: A small amount can help reduce stress and encourage social connection.

Important Reminder:
Moderation is key — generally defined as up to one glass per day for women and up to two for men. Excessive alcohol can lead to serious health risks and outweigh any benefits.

Enjoy responsibly and pair with a healthy lifestyle for the best results.
