Solar Panels and Battery Storage installed in homes currently carry 0% VAT. Under current rules, that changes to 5% from 1 April 2027 unless the government extends it.

Energy forecasters Cornwall Insight are predicting the price cap could rise by around 16% in January, taking the typical bill to about £1,999 a year.

It's a forecast, not a confirmed figure. Ofgem announces the real number on 25 November. Martin Lewis has also warned of a rise of 10–15%, so the direction looks clear even if the exact number isn't.

Solar Panels and Battery Storage won't change the cap, but they can reduce how much of it you feel.

Real numbers from one of our customers’ EcoFlow systems this month — and they’re a great example of what Solar + Battery Storage can do.

Their self-sufficiency sits at 79.55%, meaning almost 80% of the electricity they used came from their own Solar Panels or Battery, not the grid. Generation was 4,593.87 kWh, with over 40% of their home’s power drawn straight from the Battery.

The bit we really like: the Battery is now covering enough of their overnight usage that any remaining grid import falls on their night-time tariff, so what little they do pull from the grid costs less too.

This is exactly what a well-sized system should be doing — cutting bills and cutting reliance on the grid at the same time.

Another great install completed in Stratford-upon-Avon! ☀️

This home now has 11.63kWp of JA Solar Paneks paired with 3 x Tesla Powerwall 3 Batteries — giving an estimated 10,176 kWh of Solar generation a year, with around 70% of that used directly on-site.

The Battery setup has been sized specifically to maximise time-of-use charging through the winter months, so the homeowners can top up on cheap overnight rates and use stored power when it’s needed most, even when the sun isn’t shining as much.

Ofgem’s new price cap lands this week, and it’s expected to push bills to their highest point in three years from October. Wholesale gas costs have jumped sharply over the past few months, and energy debt across the UK has now passed £6bn.

There is some help coming — VAT on electricity bills is being cut in October, which should trim around £50 off a typical annual bill. But for a lot of households, that’s a drop in the ocean against a bill that’s still roughly 70% higher than before the energy crisis began.

The households who are best insulated from these swings are the ones generating and storing their own power. A Solar and Battery system doesn’t stop wholesale prices moving, but it does mean less of your bill depends on them.
