Psychological safety matters. But it does not begin with a policy, team agreement or invitation to “speak up”.
It begins with psychological presence.
Psychological safety is the environment where people can contribute, question, disagree and acknowledge uncertainty without fear. Psychological presence is the attention, emotional availability and groundedness a leader brings to the moment.
Five behaviours make presence visible:
• Attention : listening without rehearsing a rebuttal.
• Regulation : creating space between stimulus and response.
• Curiosity : asking, “What are we not seeing yet?”
• Acknowledgement : recognising what has been said.
• Response : showing candour has been heard.
Presence is not perfect calm or constant availability. It is staying connected when the news is difficult. People notice your tone and response.
Before your next important meeting, pause: breathe three times, notice what you are carrying, choose attention, steadiness, curiosity or courage : then listen.
Psychological safety is created through repeated moments of human engagement.
