Another really interesting project for us — and one that offered a rare opportunity to work within a building rich in local history.

The Wellington Rooms, also known locally as the “Irish Centre,” is a historic Neo-classical Regency building on Mount Pleasant in Liverpool. Originally built in 1815, it served as a prestigious assembly room and cultural hub for generations.

Although the building has sadly stood vacant and deteriorating since 1997, it remains an iconic part of Liverpool’s architectural heritage. Projects like this give us the chance to experience and help preserve places that many people may never get to see firsthand.

In the spotlight: one of our most interesting local projects undertaken by the team. We also had the pleasure of meeting the crew from HMS Astute who were there to study the vessel and provide technical information to the project team.

ASBESTOS TRAINING
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 is detailed as ‘information, instruction and training’ and specifies that training must be provided to all those responsible for the management of asbestos within the premises.

Furthermore, anyone who is likely to come across asbestos during their day-to-day duties should also be provided with asbestos awareness training so as to mitigate the risks.

Finally anyone who is tasked with removing asbestos containing materials much be trained and competent to do so.

⚠️ Asbestos Awareness – Know the Risk ⚠️

Asbestos was once widely used in buildings for its strength and heat resistance, but we now know it poses a serious health risk. When disturbed, asbestos releases tiny fibres into the air that can be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs. Over time, this exposure can lead to severe illnesses, including lung disease and cancer.

The danger is that asbestos isn’t always visible, and attempting to remove it without the right expertise can make the situation far worse. That’s why it’s essential to leave it to professionals.

Fibre Safe staff are trained to safely identify, manage, and remove asbestos using approved methods and protective equipment. From thorough inspections to controlled removal and disposal, we ensure your environment is safe and compliant with regulations.

If you suspect asbestos in your property, don’t take risks—get it checked by professionals.

Another project successfully completed 👇🏼

📍 Arrowe Park Hospital

Phase 1 involved the safe removal and disposal of asbestos containing vinyl floor tiles from inside the main corridors. This had to be carried out under strict safety protocols and compliance with hazardous waste procedures.

Our team ensured:

✅ Strict control measures
✅ Safe segregation of work areas
✅ Public safety by means of air testing
✅ Minimal disruption to patients & staff

Working inside a live hospital during the busy daytime brings its own set of hazards and demonstrates why experience and planning are critical to these projects.

Onto Phase 2 !

Asbestos in ironing boards?… yes we still find them!

A domestic survey in an old bungalow this week highlighted an asbestos cement plate on an ironing board which looked to still be in use.

Asbestos plates were commonly installed on ironing boards primarily for their exceptional heat-resistant properties.

The asbestos was used to create a durable resting pad at the head of the board for hot irons, preventing the scorching or burning of the ironing board cover and the board itself.

Of course asbestos wasn’t just limited to ironing boards, many old domestic appliances and utensils that produced heat or needed to resist heat also contained asbestos.

Examples include hair curlers, hairdryers, toasters, deep fat fryers, fire blankets, oven gloves and even babies bottle warmers !

It has come to light in the past week that some Anko (Kmart) magic sand and similar products have been found to contain asbestos fibres, leading to recalls and health advisories. 👇🏼

The asbestos detected was small amounts of Chrysotile but predominately showing Tremolite. The latter is an amphibole asbestos type, one of the most carcinogenic asbestos types.

Tremolite is the same asbestos mineral found in contaminated talc involved in global litigation, including Johnson & Johnson talcum powder cases.

This fibre typically stems from crushed mineral sources, suggesting this is likely an upstream supply chain issue rather than an isolated manufacturing error.

Unfortunately these products have been in circulation since 2020, meaning that children may have had up to five years of repeated exposure in schools, early learning centres, and their own homes.

The Australian Consumer Competition Commission (ACCC) on Wednesday announced the recall for 1.3kg versions of Kadink Sand (1.3kg) and Educational Colours – Rainbow Sand, as well as the 1kg packages of Creatistics – Coloured Sand products. Additionally, Officeworks has recalled KD Plain Sand (1.3kg), KD Magic Sand (2kg) in natural and purple, and Kadink six-piece decorative sand.

While there have been no specific recalls announced for the UK, it's wise to be cautious with similar products, especially if their origin is unclear.

Yet another contamination from Chinese products…
