Tribute to Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson, , a towering figure, one of the most influential and courageous voices in the global struggle for civil rights and social justice.
I first had the honour of meeting Reverend Jackson in 1993 during a trade mission from Birmingham to Chicago. On that historic occasion, Birmingham finalised the twinning of our two great cities, a significant moment of international friendship and cooperation.
During our visit this great man graciously invited a few members of the delegation to attend a prayer breakfast he was hosting to raise funds for disadvantaged communities in the city. What followed left a lasting impression on me. He later welcomed us into his home for brunch.
Despite his global stature, he was remarkably humble and hospitable. It did not feel like visiting an international Civil Rights Icon, it felt like being welcomed into the home of a member of my own family. Reverend Jackson’s presence and encouragement underscored the importance of building bridges across nations, united by shared values of equality and opportunity.
I was privileged to meet him again in 2013 during his visit to Birmingham. Despite his global stature, he remained warm, gracious, and deeply committed to uplifting communities wherever he went.
Reverend Jackson’s life was defined by courage, conviction, and an unwavering belief in justice. He gave a powerful voice to the marginalised and reminded us all that the pursuit of equality is a responsibility shared across borders.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations to stand firm for fairness, dignity, and hope.
“Keep Hope Alive” - Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
