The government just bought out a brand new policy around child exploitation in the UK. Hereโ€™s the lowdown:

๐ŸŸง Child criminal exploitation: Itโ€™s now a criminal offence for an adult to use a child to commit any criminal activity. The maximum sentence is now 10 years in prison and/or a fine. For us, the best bit about this policy is the new child criminal exploitation civil preventative orders. These are flexible, depending on the nature of the crime. The offender can, for example, be banned from contacting certain people or going to a specific place.

๐ŸŸง Cuckooing: Also known as โ€˜home takeover,โ€™ this is where criminals take over someoneโ€™s home for criminal activity. The bill makes it an offence to do this without the personโ€™s consent. Crucially, under-18s canโ€™t legally consent, even if theyโ€™ve been given all the relevant info. This is a great step forward in safeguarding minors from being groomed by criminal gangs.

๐ŸŸง Coerced internal concealment: The new bill makes a perpetrator coercing someone to conceal an item inside their body a criminal offence. Coerced internal concealment is incredibly violating for the victim, so weโ€™re glad this bill focuses on preventing it.

There is some noise about this new policy just being window dressing, since some of these offences are already addressed in law. But there are gaps in specifically addressing child exploitation in current legislation. This bill aims to bridge these gaps - do you think it succeeds? The full policy paper is linked in the comments.

Keeping up-to-date on new and complex legislation isnโ€™t easy. We run a newsletter on all the latest, need-to-know info in safeguarding. Link to sign up in the comments! ๐Ÿ’™

Every employer should be disability inclusive. But they arenโ€™t.

โ“ What is a disability inclusive employer? Thereโ€™s a government scheme that ensures disabled individuals feel valued and empowered to participate fully in the workplace. If your company signs up to this, they receive a disability confident certificate.

โ“ Is the company you work for disability inclusive? Everyone has the right to feel safe and like their needs are met in the workplace. If the company you work for isnโ€™t disability inclusive, we can help you persuade themโ€ฆ

โ€ฆHere are some reasons why they should be:

โœ… Disabled people bring a diverse range of skills to the workplace. Studies show that a more diverse workplace can increase innovation, production and ultimately, revenue. You bring value to your company when you include disabled people.

โœ… Reduce cost of sickness and absence. Life is unpredictable. A longstanding member of your team could suddenly find themselves needing adjustments in the workplace. What if, instead of them having to go off sick long-term, you could provide them with the tools to keep adding value?

โœ… Retain loyal and hardworking staff. It stands to reason that disabled people are more likely to stick in a workplace that offers them the adjustments they need. Nearly 1-in-4 people of working age are classed as disabled; can you afford to alienate a quarter of people?

โœ… Itโ€™s a good thing to do. Giving disabled people the same rights and access to work as non-disabled people is simply the right thing to do.

As a company whose entire purpose is to safeguard vulnerable people, we wouldnโ€™t feel right unless we were safeguarding our employees. Weโ€™re proud to be a disability inclusive employer! ๐Ÿ’™

Last week, our very own Sean Monaghan had the honour of speaking at Lancashire County Council's Social Work Academy Fayre - and what a day it was!

He delivered two powerful sessions that invited practitioners to pause, reflect, and reimagine:
๐ŸŸง Writing Effective Plans with Children, Young People and their Families
๐ŸŸง Safety Planning: Building Safety

But it wasnโ€™t just about the sessionsโ€”it was about the people. He had the joy of reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting so many passionate new ones๐Ÿงก. Thereโ€™s something electric about being in a room full of people who care this deeply.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, reflected honestly, and shared so generously. Your voices, insights, and energy are what gives this work added meaning.

See you at the next one. โœจ
