Industry News: Could the 2G switch-off affect your fire alarm?

The Fire Industry Association is encouraging organisations to check whether any fire and life-safety systems still rely on 2G connectivity, following correspondence from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Some fire alarms, signalling equipment and monitoring systems may still use 2G, either as their main connection or as a fallback. If that applies to a system, it will need to be addressed before the relevant network is withdrawn.

The switch-off is still several years away, with current operator plans beginning from 2029, but checking existing equipment now can help businesses understand whether any future upgrade or migration work may be needed.

For facilities teams, this is a useful prompt to establish how monitored systems communicate and whether any older equipment could be affected.
