🔍 PSA for Immigrants in the UK:

Earning from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Upwork, Freelancer, eBay, Vinted and other platforms could affect your ILR 🇬🇧📵

A lot of people don’t realise that monetising content or having a side hustle through platforms like Meta (Facebook, Instagram), YouTube, TikTok, eBay, Vinted, Shopify, or freelance platforms like Upwork or Fiverr could land them in trouble, not because it’s illegal per se, but because it might breach the conditions of your visa.

Let’s break it down clearly 👇

⚠️ 1. What’s the Risk?

If you're on a visa like:

✅ Skilled Worker visa

✅ Health and Care Worker visa

✅ Student visa

✅ Or even some dependent or partner routes…

You may not be allowed to take on additional work, especially if it qualifies as:

❌ Self-employment

❌ Running a business

❌ Freelancing

❌ Working more hours than allowed under visa rules

💡 Monetising content via Meta ads, paid partnerships, YouTube monetisation, affiliate links, dropshipping, or selling via Shopify/eBay/Vinted, can easily be flagged as self-employment, which is strictly prohibited under many visa types.

🛂 2. What Happens at ILR Stage?

When applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), a Home Office caseworker checks:

📌 Your immigration history

📌 Your compliance with visa conditions

📌 Any breaches, especially unauthorised or illegal work

So, if you’ve been earning from Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Shopify, Fiverr or similar while on a restricted visa, you risk being flagged, your application delayed, or even refused.

📱 3. Examples of What Can Be Flagged:

⚠️ Receiving payment from Meta, TikTok, or YouTube

⚠️ Having a PayPal/Stripe account linked to your side hustle

⚠️ Declaring online income on your tax return while on a restricted visa

⚠️ Accepting gifts or brand deals in exchange for promo

⚠️ Dropshipping or selling on Shopify, eBay, Vinted

Even if it’s “just a side hustle” or “small money” — it counts. And remember: Meta, TikTok, YouTube and PayPal issue clear payment records, which immigration can access or request.

✅ 4. What You Can Do Instead

📌 Step-by-Step Guide: How to Get into the NHS as a Student (Especially with 20-Hour Work Limits)

Step 1: Understand Your Current Limitations

As an international student, your visa typically limits you to 20 hours of work per week during term time.

Most NHS clinical or lab-based roles (e.g., Band 2/3 Medical Laboratory Assistant) require more than 20 hours per week, which makes them unsuitable during term time.

Step 2: Be Strategic with Your Job Search

Focus on roles that are part-time or bank (as-needed) contracts that fall within the 20-hour limit.

Target entry-level support roles such as:

🧹 Domestic Assistant (cleaning)

🍽️ Kitchen Assistant or Catering Staff

🛏️ Ward Assistant or Porter

📞 Receptionist or Admin Assistant (some trusts offer part-time shifts)

These roles above 👆🏽 often have lower competition, and are more flexible with hours.

Step 3: Apply for NHS Bank Staff Opportunities

>Bank roles are casual or zero-hour contracts used by NHS Trusts to fill staffing gaps.

>They allow you to choose shifts that fit your schedule, ideal for students.

>Apply through the NHS Professionals website or the Bank Staff section of your local NHS Trust’s website.

Step 4: Use the Foot-in-the-Door Strategy

Once employed in any capacity (even as a cleaner or kitchen staff), you become an internal applicant.

Internal candidates are often:

>Given priority in hiring.

>Viewed more favourably by managers.

>Able to discuss flexible or developmental roles.

This significantly improves your chances of moving into a role that aligns with your degree, especially after graduation or during placement periods when work limits are lifted.

Step 5: Build Your Profile Along the Way

Your current experience as a Mental Health Support Worker is already relevant and valuable.

Consider adding:

>Short courses (e.g. via eLearning for Healthcare or Alison UK).

>Volunteering through NHS Trusts or local charities.

>A strong, tailored NHS Jobs profile with updated CV and a reusable supporting statement template.

🎯 Tough Truth Wednesday: NHS Job Applications

It’s becoming exhausting hearing complaints about not getting responses from NHS roles, when truthfully, many people haven’t even applied to 40 roles in a month.

Let’s be real:
🛑 10 applications a month won’t cut it.
🛑 Only applying for roles within your postcode when you need sponsorship? That won’t cut it.
🛑 Submitting and ghosting your own application? That definitely won’t cut it.

📌 If you’re serious about securing an NHS role, start acting like it.

Here’s what works (because I’ve said it over and over again):

✅ Have a well-curated TRAC and NHS Jobs account:
• Add at least 5 qualifications in the education section, include your GCSE Maths and English.
• Fill in at least 5 years of work experience.
• Use ChatGPT to help you write 5 bullet points of responsibilities for each job role, don’t just leave it empty or vague.

✅ Apply to 5–10 targeted roles every single week
Volume + consistency = visibility.

✅ Tailor your personal statement
No copy-paste laziness.

> My past and present students use variations of a prompt I designed and every single person who applied it from my free and paid sessions has received interview invites, and many now have NHS jobs.
Shabby CVs = weak personal statements. Upgrade both.

✅ Build unpaid or transferable experience
Volunteering, family care, church/community roles, they count if described well.

✅ Take online healthcare courses
Use platforms like Alison UK, FutureLearn, and Skills for Health to fill skill gaps and boost your profile.

✅ Send a follow-up email once the deadline has passed and you haven’t heard anything, it keeps you visible and shows you’re proactive.

0🎯 Post-Study Visa Strategy: How to Secure Sponsorship Within the NHS or UK Civil Service

If you’re on a UK post-study visa, two of the most strategic career moves you can make are getting into either the NHS or the UK Civil Service, even if your initial role doesn’t come with visa sponsorship.

Both sectors offer solid career progression, internal mobility, and real opportunities to transition into sponsored roles. Here’s how to play it smart:

🏥 NHS Pathway

1. Apply for entry-level NHS roles (e.g., Healthcare Assistant, Admin Assistant, Support Worker). These are usually Band 2 or 3, and while they might not offer sponsorship, they help you get your foot in the door.

2. Use your probation period wisely: Be diligent, reliable, and proactive. Learn NHS systems, build strong relationships, and gain hands-on experience.

3. 3 to 6 months after passing probation, begin actively applying for Band 4+ roles that offer visa sponsorship. Internal candidates are often prioritised and more trusted.

4. Enrol in NHS internal courses and training: Many career-boosting programmes are only available to staff. Use them to enhance your profile and increase your chances of progressing.

5. Volunteer within the trust or with another trust: This increases your visibility, builds relationships, and can open doors to other departments or roles you may not have considered.

🏛️ Civil Service Pathway

1. Apply for entry-level Civil Service roles like Administrative Officer (AO) or Executive Officer (EO). These may not offer visa sponsorship upfront, but they provide a great entry point.

2. During your probation period, show consistency, reliability, and commitment. Understand Civil Service structures, core behaviours, and departmental values.

3. 3 to 6 months after passing probation, start applying for SEO-grade and higher roles that offer visa sponsorship, especially in high-demand or understaffed departments.

📢 IMPORTANT INFO FOR CARE WORKERS & THEIR FAMILIES IN THE UK (Post-March 2024 Rules)

If you're already in the UK and your partner switched to a care worker visa after 11 March 2024, PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY ⬇️

🛑 New immigration rules now prevent care workers and senior care workers (SOC codes 6145 & 6146) from bringing dependants (spouse/partner or children) under their visa if the application was made after March 11, 2024.

Even if your partner and children are already in the UK, you cannot switch to become a dependant under this new visa.

💡 So What Can You Do?

✅ One possible option is to apply under the FLR (Further Leave to Remain) route, which allows family members already in the UK to stay based on:

🔸 Your relationship with the care worker
🔸 Your children's well-being and schooling
🔸 Article 8 of the Human Rights Act (right to family and private life)
🔸 Documentation of any serious medical issues that any of the dependants have

⚠️ Important Things to Know:

FLR is not a guaranteed solution, it’s discretionary, meaning the Home Office can approve or refuse based on your situation.

You’ll need to prove:

>That your family would face hardship if separated

>That your relationship is genuine

>That children have a stable life in the UK

>It’s not the same as a dependant visa – you may not be allowed to work or access public funds immediately.

Welcome to June!

Whether you're a recent graduate or seeking a career change, defining specific goals, actively seeking and applying feedback, building a strong professional network can significantly improve your chances of success.

Let this guide you this month

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that only those with direct NHS experience can land NHS roles. Here's the truth: the NHS values skills, not just settings.

Whether you've worked in retail, hospitality, care homes, admin, or even banking , you may already have the essential skills they’re looking for:

🔹 Communication
🔹 Empathy and compassion
🔹 Attention to detail
🔹 Teamwork
🔹 Ability to follow procedures and stay calm under pressure

I have seen people with zero NHS background step into roles like Healthcare Assistant, Administrator, Support Worker, and more just by tailoring their CV, showcasing the right experience, and being confident in what they bring to the table.

So if you've been holding back from applying – this is your sign.
The NHS hires for potential, not just past experience.

Have you transitioned into the NHS without prior experience? Share your experience in the comment 👇 Let's inspire others.

09/05/2025

Writing a supporting statement can feel overwhelming, but it’s your golden opportunity to tell your story, highlight your achievements, and show why YOU are the perfect fit for the role.

The first step is understanding what’s being asked. Carefully read the job description and person specification so you can identify the key criteria, essential skills, and desirable qualities. These are the things you need to address directly.

Structure matters! Start with a strong introduction explaining who you are and why you’re applying. In the main section, connect your experience to what they’re looking for, using clear and relevant examples. Wrap up with a conclusion that sums up why you’re the best fit and shows your enthusiasm for the role.

When you’re sharing examples, make them shine using the STAR method — describe the situation, the task, the action you took, and the result you achieved. This approach brings your experience to life and shows the impact you made.

Focus on impact, not just tasks. Instead of saying “I managed a team,” explain how you led that team and the results you delivered, like improving project delivery times or boosting team performance.

Keep your statement clear and concise. Stick to the word or character limit, avoid jargon, and write in a confident yet authentic tone that feels true to you.

Tailor every statement to the specific role or opportunity. A generic statement won’t stand out — show you’ve researched the organization, understand its mission and values, and explain why this role matters to you.

Finally, proofread your statement carefully and, if you can, get someone you trust to review it. Fresh eyes can help you catch things you might have missed and make sure your message is crystal clear.

Your supporting statement isn’t just about ticking boxes — it’s your chance to shine, tell your story, and make a lasting impression. Be confident, be authentic, and never undersell yourself. You’ve got this! 🙌
