We’re excited to introduce Legacy AiR, our new artist residency and development programme supporting emerging artists through paid creative time, mentoring, collaboration and exhibition opportunities.
For our first residency, we’re looking for one emerging conceptual portrait photographer based in Birmingham or the wider West Midlands to develop a new body of work responding to the themes of Chains — a co-production between Legacy Centre of Excellence and Birmingham Rep exploring fatherhood, care, black masculinity, memory, identity, absence and what families carry across generations.
Chains is the starting point — not a brief to illustrate the play. We want to see how you interpret its themes through your own creative practice and visual language.
✨ £2,500 artist fee
📸 Develop 5–6 new conceptual portrait works or a focused photography-led digital/projection sequence
🎨 Exhibition opportunity at Legacy in March 2027
🤝 1:1 mentoring with creative mentors Benji and Tee Max
🎭 R&D access to the Chains creative process
💡 Explore photography alongside projection, sound, light and space
🎤 Deliver your own creative workshop/masterclass
We’re particularly welcoming applications from Global Majority artists and artists whose practice connects with Black cultural narratives.
