SCT is now taking bookings for our first open-access Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (OMMT)!

Whether you work in Adult Social Care, Health, or simply want to develop your knowledge and confidence in supporting people with Learning Disabilities and Autism, this training is open to you.

📅 Course Details

✅ Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism
✅ £65 per person
✅ 9.30 - 5.00pm - Delivered in person at our training centre in Boldmere
✅ Facilitated by our experienced trainers alongside Experts with Lived Experience
✅ Delivered by an organisation approved to deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

SCT - Sutton Coldfield Training is proud to be able to offer the Early Intervention Level 4 Standard.

The Level 4 Early Intervention Practitioner qualification is ideal for professionals who work with children, young people, adults, and families who may be facing challenges that impact their wellbeing, development, or life outcomes.

This programme is particularly suited to those working in roles across education, health, social care, youth work, community services, family support, housing, and related sectors where early support can make a significant difference. By enrolling, staff will develop the skills and confidence to:

✅ Work collaboratively with multiple agencies and professionals

Today I am proud to introduce another of our experts by experience on our Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Team. Myles Gray has worked for SCT for the last 5 years in our Apprenticeship Administration Support Team.

We approached Myles about joining our OMMT Team and he was really keen to talk about how his late diagnosis of Autism has impacted his life. Welcome to the team Myles!

"Hi, I'm Myles Gray.

I have worked for Sutton Coldfield Training for over five years as an Office Administrator, and I am passionate about helping to create a more inclusive and understanding society for people with autism and learning disabilities.

Outside of work, I enjoy following Formula 1 and practising Kung Fu, both of which have taught me the value of dedication, perseverance, and continuous learning.

I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 26, which helped me better understand many of the challenges I had experienced throughout my life. Like many autistic people, I often felt misunderstood and found social interactions difficult. These personal experiences have inspired me to become involved in delivering the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.

For me, this training is more than just sharing information. It is an opportunity to share my lived experience as an autistic adult, helping others gain a deeper understanding of the daily challenges that many autistic people face. I am passionate about breaking down stereotypes, challenging misconceptions, and encouraging meaningful conversations about autism and learning disabilities.

My goal is to help people develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to ensure that individuals with autism and learning disabilities always have a voice, feel understood, and are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion in every situation.

I believe that greater understanding leads to better support, stronger communities, and more positive outcomes for everyone."

Recent reports highlighting concerns around the inappropriate access of medical records serve as an important reminder of the responsibility we all have when handling sensitive information and supporting people with care and respect.

At SCT - Sutton Coldfield Training, we are proud to be a provider of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism, helping organisations develop a better understanding of the needs, experiences, and rights of autistic people and people with a learning disability.

While this training is mandatory for many health and social care settings, the awareness, communication skills, and person-centred approaches it promotes are valuable across all sectors.

Today, I'm delighted to introduce another fantastic member of our Oliver McGowan Training Team.

🌟 Meet Peter
Peter joined SCT in 2024 and delivers on our Apprenticeships within the Children's Residential Care sector. Before joining us, he spent more than 20 years working directly in Children's Residential Care, bringing significent knowledge, experience and passion to both learners and the young people he has supported throughout his career.

Peter shares:
"I have worked alongside young people with autism for approximately 35 years. Throughout this time, I have developed a deep understanding of how young people experience and interpret the world through a variety of neurodiverse perspectives, including autism, ADHD, ADD and dyslexia.

My experience has enabled me to create supportive approaches and strategies that recognise individual strengths, needs and communication styles. I am passionate about empowering young people to develop confidence, independence and self-advocacy, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued.

By promoting understanding, inclusion and meaningful engagement, I strive to help young people feel listened to, respected and fully involved in the world around them, enabling them to reach their potential and participate positively within their communities."

"I really enjoy playing golf. Whether it's a good round or a bad one, I love being out on the course. That said, enjoying golf and being good at it are definitely two different things, and I'm still working on the second part! 😊 FORE!"

"Being part of this programme means a great deal to me. I am excited to work alongside a team of exceptional people who share a passion for supporting and advocating for adults and young people whose voices are not always heard.

Throughout my career, I have seen how many individuals with additional needs can be misunderstood or overlooked, despite having incredible strengths, abilities and potential.

I hope to help raise awareness and provide others with a greater understanding of the diverse ways young people experience and engage with the world. By sharing knowledge and promoting positive conversations, I want to highlight that challenges do not define a person and that everyone has valuable contributions to make when given the opportunity and support to succeed.

I also hope to contribute towards creating a more tolerant, accepting and understanding society, where differences are recognised as strengths rather than barriers. I believe this team has the ability to be a strong and influential voice for change, helping to improve understanding, increase inclusion and ensure that more young people feel valued, respected and empowered."

Happy Monday everyone! This morning I wanted to Introduce another member of our Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training In Learning Disability and Autism Team. Charlie was introduced to us back in September and we immediately felt a genuine warmth and connection to him. His personality is so infectious and we were blown away with his experiences and achievements in life. He even has an award named after him!

This is just a little bit of information from him.

Charlie Stonham is a performer and assistant drama practitioner with Open Theatre. He uses physical theatre, play, music, props and storytelling to connect with people and help them express themselves.

A freelance filmmaker; Charlie has a passion for storytelling.

Charlie is a guest lecturer and co-producer at University College Birmingham, a committee co-optee at Queen Alexandra College, and a former student of DV8 Sussex, which created the Charlie Stonham Award.

He was a Games Ambassador for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and is soon to become an Expert by Experience with Choice Support and the CQC.

Diagnosed with Fragile XE syndrome (FRAXE) in 2007 and autism in 2008, Charlie uses his lived experience to challenge and help people see the person, not just the diagnosis.

Many people get confused because Fragile X syndrome and Fragile XE syndrome (FRAXE) are different conditions. Fragile XE is much rarer.

“Everyone is different. Everyone has something to give. I want everyone to feel included, valued and like they belong.”

Charlie enjoys walking, visiting the cinema and theatre, cooking, and spending time with family.
