The Beauty of Enduring Work: What Are You Building?
Walking into St. Mary’s Church in Kraków was nothing short of breathtaking. Every detail—meticulously crafted, deeply reverent—spoke of years, perhaps centuries, of dedication. As I stood in awe of its grandeur, I couldn’t help but ask: How long did it take to build something so magnificent? What moments of vision, setbacks, persistence, and renewed hope did the builders experience in bringing this masterpiece to life?
That question stayed with me. Because standing there, silenced by the beauty and craftsmanship surrounding me, one truth rose above all others: Things of true beauty take time, effort, and unwavering commitment.
My mind turned to moments in my own life where the outcomes exceeded expectations—projects, goals, and dreams that eventually flourished. And in every single case, the common thread was clear: they took longer than anticipated, and required more of me than I first imagined. But the reward? It always far surpassed the investment.
As a Leadership Coach, I have the privilege of hearing people share their boldest dreams and deepest aspirations. I’m invited into the sacred space of their hopes—what they want to build, the legacy they long to leave. And while their paths vary, I’ve noticed one challenge many of us face: the temptation to give up when progress is slow or obstacles appear too great.
Why? Because it’s easy to lose sight of the destination. We forget the vision, the “why,” and the kind of person we become in the process of pursuing it.
I wonder—did the architects, stonemasons, and artists who worked on St. Mary’s know their work would one day inspire thousands? Did they understand that their persistence through hardship, with limited tools and endless challenges, would create something that would last far beyond their lifetimes? Or maybe—it was that very vision that fuelled them to keep going.
Whatever it was, I’m grateful they didn’t stop. Because their work reignited something in me.
So I’ll ask you what I asked myself that day:
🔹 What are you building?
🔹 Who are you becoming as you build it?
🔹 What will it take for you to stay focused and committed until the work is complete?
Because here’s the truth: Your masterpiece may take time—but it might just inspire someone else to dream bigger and reach further.
Keep building. It matters more than you know.
