7 Reasons You Should Make a Personal Injury Claim

Some people think that if you get injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you shouldn’t claim compensation. We’ve always found that to be a strange way of thinking. If someone else’s negligence causes you to suffer injury, pain, and loss, does it seem right that you, the injured party, goes uncompensated?

Here are 7 reasons you should make an injury claim if you are involved in an accident caused by someone else.

1) The whole idea of claiming personal injury compensation is to put an injured person back into the position they were in before the accident happened. You’ll sometimes see press reports saying that people’ win’ compensation. They don’t. They are just being compensated for the pain, loss and suffering the accident caused them.

2) The injury you suffer in an accident may get worse before it gets better. After being involved in an accident, many people try to struggle on, for fear of being seen as weak. The problem with doing that is two-fold. First of all, ask yourself why you should struggle when someone else has caused you harm? Secondly, what may first appear to be no more than a minor injury could be something far more disabling.

3) You can use any compensation you recover from a personal injury claim to help you get back on your feet again. When you have had a rough time after an accident, the last thing you want is to suffer financial hardship too. Compensation will take away any feelings of economic insecurity.

4) You have only three years from the date of an accident in which to claim for personal injury. Should you decide not to claim straight after the accident, for whatever reason, it’s easy for time to slip away. If you haven’t started a claim within three years and your injury flares up, then there’s nothing you can do. You can’t begin a claim after three years have passed since the accident happened.

5) The whole idea of insurance is that it is there to compensate people who suffer loss or injury in an accident caused by the person (or company) who took out the insurance policy. It’s the reason that motor insurance, employer’s liability insurance and public liability insurance are compulsory! It’s the insurance company that pays out when you make a compensation claim.

6) Making a claim helps to correct poor behaviour. If people, companies or authorities don’t get held to account for their careless actions, then more accidents, not less, will happen. Compensation claims do help to change people’s action and make them more accountable.

7) By making a claim, you will only get the compensation that you are entitled to receive. There is some myth that people get bundles of money for nothing at the end of a compensation claim. You will only receive compensation for what you can prove. A medical report will detail your injuries, and receipts and other documentation will support your other claims, such as loss of earnings.
