🍁 Autumn Pests: Cat and Dog Fleas

Why they’re a problem: Flea populations peak in the warmer months but can become a major issue in autumn as pets and their pests move indoors. Fleas cause itchy, uncomfortable bites and can be difficult to eliminate without professional treatment, due to their life cycle and the fact they spend 90% of their type in the environment and not on a host.Their eggs, larvae, and pupae nestle deep into carpets, rugs, and soft furnishings, waiting for the right conditions to emerge. Flea pupae can stay dormant for weeks, hatching when they sense movement or warmth, so you don’t have to have a pet to move into a property only to find out you have fleas!

Signs to look for: Excessive scratching in your pets. You may also notice small, dark brown or black insects in your pet's fur or around bedding and carpets. Bites, particularly around your ankles. Severe infestations, you can even see the fleas jumping around the carpets!
Did you know: When it comes to survival, cat and dog fleas (Ctenocephalides felis and canis) are annoyingly resilient.
- Adults can survive a few days to two weeks without feeding, depending on the temperature and humidity
- Pupae can survive for weeks, even months, in a dormant state inside their cocoons
Eggs and larvae can stay tucked away in carpet fibres, feeding on organic matter until conditions are right to grow

So even if you haven’t seen your pet scratch in a while, the fleas might still be in the environment—waiting for a host to come back!
