Among the most celebrated official Bowmore releases ever produced, this remarkable 38-year-old single malt was distilled on 14 January 1957 and bottled nearly four decades later from just five bourbon hogsheads, cask numbers 216–220. Released in the mid-1990s, it was one of the oldest and earliest vintage Bowmores ever offered by the distillery and remains a landmark bottling in the history of Islay whisky.
Matured in Bowmore’s legendary No.1 Vaults, the whisky was bottled at its natural cask strength of 40.1%, with the casks reportedly rescued just before falling below the legal minimum bottling strength. Presented without colouring or chill filtration, this release yielded only 861 bottles, making it exceptionally scarce even at the time of its launch.
The Bowmore 1957 38 Year Old is revered for its extraordinary elegance and complexity. Long maturation softened the distillery’s trademark peat influence, creating a beautifully balanced whisky that combines gentle maritime smoke with layers of tropical fruits, citrus, honey, polished oak and subtle spices. Frequently cited among the greatest official Bowmore bottlings ever released, it remains a benchmark for mature Islay whisky and a true collector's piece from one of Scotland's most iconic distilleries.
