The Sorting Office

The Sorting Office Third sector business support. Creative grammar freak. GSOH. Kettle always on. Get sorted. and mad beagle. I set up The Sorting Office in 2015. Deadlines will be met.

A bit about me & my business... I'm Alison Powrie, I live in gorgeous East Perthshire with my husband, teenage boys (I know..) The Sorting Office provides Business Support including Administration, Marketing and Social Media support as well as all aspects of events organisation and management.

For many years, I worked in the legal profession where I learnt numerous transferable skills, including

communication skills and working to tight time schedules, as well as the importance of confidentiality and accuracy of work.

I currently work with a number of third sector organisations, both locally in East Perthshire and Angus, and further afield, providing a range of admin, marketing and communication support services, tailored to suit their individual needs. My clients come from a variety of backgrounds, including enterprise support, tourism, and the arts – meaning that no two days are the same!

I am passionate about supporting small businesses and organisations, and love working through the challenges which this brings.

My approach is always professional, but also friendly and flexible. All tasks are approached with good humour and a "can do" attitude. Once a task is delegated to me, you can be sure that I will take it on fully and complete it efficiently. I am willing and able to tackle many different areas of work, and I love a challenge. If I feel that I really can't help you out with something I will say so - and will probably be able to put you in touch with someone who can.

I can work on a flexible basis as and when required – one-off or ongoing to suit client needs and budgets. As I am self-employed, this saves clients the hassle of dealing with the headaches which come with employing staff. I can work from my own office or travel - whatever suits. Get in touch if you want to find out more - I'm always happy to be distracted by chatting to other small business people and hearing about their story. Oh and very importantly - the kettle is always on!

Spring is here, and as we look ahead to summer, the coming warmer weather will open up plenty of opportunities to get out, explore, and enjoy a range of wonderful events.

It’s the perfect time to meet many of the talented Perthshire Artisans in person, discover their beautiful work, and make a day of it.

From Highland Games and arts and crafts markets to exhibitions, garden fairs, and
Potfest Scotland at Scone Palace, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

In our latest blog, find some key dates for your diary where you can find a selection of Artisans and experience their incredible creations up close.

Marking International Women's Day with this image from the Dundee Women's Festival, sadly folded last year. It was a fantastic, empowering event which I worked with for several years. Image by the wonderfully talented Dulcie Robertson.

Celebrate the amazing women around you every day - may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.

I ❤️ what I do because of you!

However you might be spending the day, sending you happy valentine vibes.

"dreich" - dreary, bleak, as in 'a dull, dreich February day, when all self-employed persons must spend their time hiding under a blanket and snoozing'

If only! Although I am wrapped in a blanket with a hot chocolate, having raided the remaining festive shortbread. And the To Do List is far from blank, for which I am, of course, very grateful.8

Have a happy Monday, and turn a dreich day into a cosy, productive one.

😱 And yes, yet again, I find myself scrambling to complete and submit my tax return before the deadline of 31st January!

Every single year, I vow that will get ahead of the game, and yet every single year, this happens... and so much for having a gentle start to 2026!

So now I vow to get organised for the joy that is the impending Making Tax Digital changes. If you're going down this rabbit hole, there's an e-course on the GrowBiz Scotland website, which you might find helpful.

Today I'm at Miller Gerrard Solicitors and Estate Agents dealing with a variety of matters including Wills, Powers of Attorney and conveyancing.

I love this part of my work, and particularly enjoy meeting with clients and supporting them to make important decisions to plan ahead. Here's a snapshot of my room - as you can imagine I adore the old books and vintage seals! Photo courtesy of Kelly McIntyre who has taken some great images which will be added to the firm's website soon.

Take care if you are out and about, the snow may have stopped but the pavements are slippy underfoot.

After a conversation with a colleague before Christmas, I've been giving a lot of thought to how use January.

There's a lot of pressure to make (mostly unrealistic) resolutions, to hit the ground running and start frantically organising the year ahead.

But what if we were to ditch the pressure and use the month to recharge, gently reflect, quietly plan, and restore clarity? This would surely give us the focus and energy to tackle the coming months with a more positive mindset?

Anyway, I'm going it a go - aside from the fact I haven't done my tax return yet! Stress, what stress?!

I met with a colleague today who recently set up her own business. After imparting my 'wisdom' I realised that I have dreadfully neglected my own social media presence whilst busy focusing on that of my clients. Ain't that always the way!

So I guess with this post I'm holding myself accountable to get sorted. We shall see..
