"Confidence comes from competence, not permission."
In recognition of International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting the voices of women working in the security and crowd management industry.
As a minority within the security industry, it’s important that we champion the people who are helping to create opportunities, support others, and encourage more individuals to consider a career in the field.
This series has been organised by some of our office team, Gemma Newman & Grace Dunkley - to highlight the voices and experiences of the women on our team.
Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing insights from members of our team about what working in the industry - and with us - means to them. They’ll also be sharing advice and encouragement for other women who may be considering a career in crowd management.
To finish up, here's some really important messages from other female staff we wanted to share..
"One of the most valuable pieces of advice I’ve heard from a woman in the security industry is that confidence comes from competence, not permission. She told me to focus on really knowing my procedures, understanding risk, and communicating clearly because when you’re prepared, you don’t have to second-guess yourself in high-pressure situations. She also highlighted that you don’t need to copy anyone else’s leadership style to be effective. Professional presence looks different for everyone, and people respond best to authenticity backed by capability. That perspective helped me stop waiting until I felt confident before stepping forward. Instead, I focused on preparation, consistency, and speaking with clarity and my confidence grew naturally from doing the job well."
"[One myth I'd like to see debunked is] That you need to be a big strong man…… main part of the role is customer service, if you can talk to people in a calm respectful way you are exactly right for the role."
"You are just as strong as a man in more ways than strength"
