5 Tips for pointing with lime 👇

1. If your raking out old mortar, do so cautiously.

We recommend keeping it simple with hand tools over power tools.

2. Ensure you dampen down your background to control suction.

This helps prevent the mortar drying out and cracking.

3. While it might be tempting, don't over work the mortar when placing it in the joint.

If you do, you'll likely smear mortar on your stonework.

4. Once you're ready to compact and finish the joint, grab your churn brush.

If you strike the mortar and see pinholes, it's likely too wet and needs a bit more time.

5. Always budget for hessian

Fresh lime work requires protection from the elements.

Here are a few throwbacks featuring the legendary Master Plasterer, Jeff Orton.

With an incredible career spanning prestigious projects and years spent teaching others the craft, Jeff has long been a true luminary in the world of lime rendering and plastering.

We were fortunate to welcome him onsite at Cornish Lime, where he delivered one of our decorative moulds courses.

Today, our Decorative Plaster & Running Moulds Masterclass is led by Sean Wheatley, who shares the same passion for traditional materials and time-honoured methods.

Our next course runs this July and places are filling up fast.

Why use fibreglass mesh?

When plastering or rendering with lime, particularly on high-suction backgrounds such as cob, chalk, brick and rubble, there is the possibility movement to cause cracking within the material.

Fibreglass mesh is a reliable and versatile reinforcement material. By aiding to distribute stress, it improves flexural and tensile strength of the plaster of render. Reducing the risk of cracking.

Durable, flexible and alkali resistant, fibreglass mesh is compatible with a wide range of materials including lime based plasters and renders.

Widely favoured across traditional and contemporary rendering and plastering works, fibreglass mesh is suitable for both internal and external applications.

Multiple sizes are available to purchase by roll or metre in store, or via the website.

Happy Retirement Phil!

From acquiring the first plot in 1990 to where we are today, we’ve made some excellent memories over the years.

🔨 Building and expanding the plant

⛪ Visiting some of the worlds most iconic landmarks

🏀 Supporting local causes

⛄ Avoiding the obligatory Christmas party games

👷 Teaching 1000’s of people to better understand lime-based materials.

From riding on the digger, go karting around the parking lot, and roping in their friends to clean up the yard. To carving their own paths in the industry and becoming directors themselves.

We know that Adam, Chris and the rest of the team here are proud of all we have built together and are and excited to continue the legacy you began over 30 years ago.

Don’t worry, we know you’ll still be stopping by to walk the dogs, drive the digger and host the courses, so we’ll keep turning the lights off and buying the “affordable” coffee!

Congratulations Phil! We wish you all the best on this new chapter!

Berry Tower has truly stood the test of time.

Built using coursed, squared, local stone from Bodiniel Quarry, the tower’s construction began on the 12th of September 1501 and continued throughout the summer months, growing just 6 ft every year, for the following decade.

Finalised in 1510 the building was said to be a fine one. Roofed with lead sheets, divided by 3 wooden floors, and dressed with granite pinnacles topped with brass weathervanes and iron crosses, it housed the all important bell rung to call the local community to prayer.

It’s steadfast construction saw it withstand the dissolution of the monasteries led by King Henry VIII between 1536 and 1540, and the bishops grant to dismantle the tower and repurpose the stone into a new vicarage in the early 19th century.

Our Founder Phil Brown had the privilege of working on this historic Cornish monument many years ago and some say that the detailed Celtic memorial monuments on the surrounding grounds inspired our logo.
