A warm day up on the moors above Bolton, taking part in the archaeological dig for the Two Lads Cairns restoration on Woodland Trust - Smithills Estate

Tuesday was an opportunity for local groups to get involved and have a go at the dig themselves. A huge thanks to the on site experts and the Woodland Trust for the opportunity to get involved.

We didn’t uncover anything particularly significant today, although we did find a few pieces of uranium glass… Google it!

A great day to be out on the moors, getting hands on with a little bit of local history and helping with the restoration of this fascinating site.

What a view for a pre-construction meeting!

Works are about to commence on the restoration of the iconic Two Lads Cairns on the The Woodland Trust Smithills Estate.

The carefully planned restoration will involve the sensitive reconstruction of the cairns, alongside archaeological excavations and ecological management to help protect and enhance this important local landmark.

A great project to be involved in and we can’t wait to visit the finished scheme.

Back in 2019 Appletons supported the Woodland Trust in obtaining planning permission and overseeing the build of the popular car park and meeting point at Walker Fold. It’s great to see the tree planting establish over time.

Protecting Heritage While Safeguarding Wildlife. We’re proud to be supporting The Woodland Trust with the restoration of the iconic Two Lads Cairns on Winter Hill, with Bolton Council approving and discharging the wildlife protection condition for the project.

Appletons prepared the detailed a precautionary working method statement for ecological impact and mitigation. Ensuring that the restoration of this important moorland landmark can proceed without harm to local wildlife. Our assessment considered a wide range of species, including birds, bats, hares, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals.

Key measures include:
✔️ Strict noise and vibration controls to protect the West Pennine Moors
✔️ Nesting bird checks and seasonal working restrictions
✔️ Sensitive lighting considerations
✔️ Practical safeguards for small mammals during construction
✔️ Clear stop-work protocols if wildlife is encountered

The approved plans will see both cairns carefully deconstructed, recorded, and rebuilt using traditional dry stone techniques, preserving historic integrity while meeting modern environmental standards.
