Happy new year to all my family, friends, colleagues and work partners. I hope everyone had a good festive break, and managed to relax and unwind for a short while?

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2022 - what are your plans for the year? It hasn't been easy to plan over the last 18 months or so, with all the restrictions around Covid, but thinking ahead about what we might want to achieve, whether in our business or personally, is always good practice. I'm starting to make some lists, and plan the things that I would like to do this year. I am going to try and keep it simple and not over-complicated, as with the ever changing rules and restrictions around Covid, my plans may have to flex and adapt accordingly!

Please do share your plans for 2022 - we may be able to learn and support each other!

As Managers and Leaders, what are the skills that we need for successful Appraisals?
An effective appraisal is where the member of staff being appraised does most of the talking, and the Manager or Leader doing the appraisal listens and summarises the key points to check for understanding.
Key skills are asking the right questions, actively listening, giving both positive & constructive feedback, and discussing& agreeing solutions and next steps.

As Leaders and Managers, what process do you have for your Performance Appraisals?
Do you start with setting the standards of performance you are looking for from your staff? And then communicating those standards clearly to everyone so that they understand?
How do you then measure their performance and do you compare it to the standards you set?
And does giving feedback come easily to you, and is it effective? It's often easier to give praise and positive feedback, and not as easy to tell people that they aren't performing to the standards you set.

How many Managers and Leaders manage the performance of their staff? And I don't just mean at the annual Appraisal. Your people are a very important part of your business, and you should be engaging with your staff and teams on a regular basis to see how they are getting on with their work and the targets that they have been set. It's just as important to give positive recognition for things that your members of staff are doing well, as well as discussing areas for improvement with them.

Managing the performance of our people and teams is so important - it's another key skill for managers and leaders.
What do we mean by Managing Performance? It's about understanding a member of staffs job role, their targets and goals and managing their work performance against those criteria. In other words letting people know what they are doing well, and also where they need to improve. There are many benefits not only to the business, but also to the individual.
