At Barnes Associates, we spend our days looking inside trees — and if you’ve ever seen a tree cross-section, you’ll know… it looks a bit like a pie!.🥧

Just like every slice of a pie tells you what’s inside, every ring of a tree tells a story about its age, health and history.🌳

We specialise in understanding what’s happening inside your trees, helping you make informed decisions about their care, safety and longevity.

So this National Pie Week, we’re celebrating slices of knowledge — not just slices of pie. 😜🥧

❄️🌨️ How to Protect Trees During Snowy Weather 🌳💚

Snow and ice may look beautiful, but they can cause serious damage to trees if we’re not careful. Follow these tips to help trees stay strong all winter long:

🌲 Remove heavy snow carefully
Use a broom or soft brush to gently sweep snow off branches. Always brush upward, starting from the lowest branches to prevent breakage. Never shake branches—cold wood is brittle and can snap easily.

🌲 Protect roots with mulch
Add a 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base of trees to insulate roots and retain moisture. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

🌲 Water before freezes
If temperatures allow and the ground isn’t frozen, water trees deeply before a major freeze. Hydrated roots are better protected against cold stress.

🌲 Prevent salt damage
Road salt can harm trees. Use pet-safe or tree-safe ice melt and create barriers to keep salty runoff away from roots.

🌲 Prune wisely
Wait until the snow and ice melt to prune damaged branches. Removing broken limbs promptly helps prevent disease and further injury.

🌲 Support young or weak trees
Stake young trees if needed to prevent bending or uprooting from heavy snow and strong winter winds.

🌲 Be patient after storms
Some trees may look damaged but can recover once temperatures rise. Give them time before taking action.

🌍 Healthy trees protect our environment—let’s protect them this winter! 💚

🌳 Arborsonic Tomography in action at Barnes Associates!

Here’s a demonstration of the Arborsonic Tomography kit by Ian Barnes, showing how we assess the internal condition of trees safely and non-invasively.

This technology helps us detect decay, cavities, and structural weaknesses — all while keeping the tree intact 🌿

And yes… the final step is just as important: this is how you pack away an Arborsonic Tomography kit properly 😄📦

(We also provide a laminated packing guide with the kit, so you can always remember how it should be packed away safely and correctly to ensure long-term durability.)

🌲❄️ How to Take Care of Trees in Snowy Weather ❄️🌲

Snow and freezing temperatures can put real stress on trees, especially young or newly planted ones. A little winter care can go a long way towards keeping them healthy and preventing long-term damage.

1️⃣ Remove heavy snow safely
If snow builds up on branches, it can cause them to bend or snap under the weight. Use a broom or long-handled brush to gently sweep snow off — always brushing upward. Never shake branches or try to knock ice off, as frozen wood becomes brittle and can break easily.

2️⃣ Protect the roots with mulch
Roots are often more vulnerable than the branches. Apply a 5–10 cm layer of mulch (wood chips, bark, or leaf mould) around the base of the tree to insulate the soil and regulate temperature. Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot and pests.

3️⃣ Water before the ground freezes
If there has been little rainfall and the soil is dry, give trees a deep watering before a hard freeze. Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil and helps prevent roots from drying out over winter.

4️⃣ Avoid salt damage
Road and pavement salt can burn roots and damage bark. Try to keep de-icing salts away from tree bases, and consider using sand or pet-safe alternatives where possible.

5️⃣ Protect young and vulnerable trees
Young trees, thin-barked species, or evergreens may benefit from extra protection such as tree wraps, windbreaks, or hessian to reduce frost cracking and winter burn.

6️⃣ Prune only when necessary
Avoid heavy pruning in winter unless a branch is damaged or dangerous. Pruning at the wrong time can expose trees to disease or further stress.

❄️ Caring for trees in winter helps them conserve energy, avoid damage, and grow back stronger in spring — protecting both your landscape and the environment.
