How’s your new year starting?

I feel like all the work and conversations of Q4 are coming to fruition at the start of the new year which is exciting.

More importantly, we worked on those little voices in your head that try to stop that business growth - you know the ones that say you’re not capable of doing that, or earning that amount etc (I know I’m not the only one 😆).

Being a working parent means life sometimes throws you curveballs.

Today’s curveball was a poorly 8 year old. I was scheduled to attend my first in person networking event since the pandemic. I was so excited (outfit planned the night before and everything 😀).

But instead I shall be taking advantage of the long cuddles on the sofa (which get less and less as they get older). I may finally even finish my website copy that I’ve been meaning to do for months (in between holding back her hair -bless).

But this is a reminder to myself, that although I may get frustrated with my own business at times, sometimes you just have to embrace the unexpected and enjoy the flexible perks of being my own boss.

I absolutely love planning! With all the changes happening right now, especially in the UK, you might be thinking you need to start building new goals or reassessing the ones you do have. If this is you right now, here’s my top tips for creating an achievable plan.

1. Set the goal – being clear on the end goal is vital so that you can celebrate your success when you reach it. Whether it’s a revenue goal, launching a new course or freeing up 4 hours of your time each week, just make sure it’s a SMART goal.
2. Big Deliverables - Get brainstorming and think of what needs to be done or created for that end goal to be achieved. I love a using mind map or postic notes for this part.
3. Tiny Tasks – Take each big deliverable and think of EVERYTHING that needs to be done to make that big deliverable possible. It doesn’t matter how big or small add it to the list. Bring in experts to help scope & price areas that are really outside of your knowledge.
4. Create your plan – Take all the big deliverables and then list all of the tiny tasks underneath in the order in which they should happen. I love excel for this part.
5. When - Decide when the work needs to be done by – give it a deadline. For more complex plans you’ll need to allocate the amount of time. This will help with planning your teams time and especially important if your using external contractors for any of the work.
6. Who – every task needs a person responsible, or nothing will be achieved. Allocate a person (people) who will do the work and give that person the work. PM tools work great for this.
7. Breakdown all your costs – a good plan has a budget.
8. If you’ve got this far, give yourself a huge pat on the back and get your plan uploaded into your favourite PM tool – I’m currently loving Asana!
9. See the pitfalls - take a look over your plan and start to see all the potential pitfalls and how it might go wrong. This isn’t meant to paralyse you into not doing the work. It’s designed to help you see future problems so you can either avoid them as part of your planning or be prepared if they do happen. A good plan takes out all the surprises and leads to your success.

Do you ever do anything that just comes effortlessly to you, you get completely in the zone and completely lose track of time?

For me that’s planning! It’s not sexy, but it fills my heart with joy.

I recently supported someone who had a major life event coming up but just couldn’t get her head around everything that needed to be done.

I could clearly see all the steps that needed to be taken, when they needed to be done and by who. It’s a skill I’ve developed over 15 years of running IT Projects and I absolutely love it! What was effortless to me was a huge mountain to her and I absolutely loved helping her so that everything was a success.

It’s Monday! Are you ready for the week ahead?

Do you struggle to get motivated to start your week? Or are you flying out the gates but trying to do a thousand things at once?

Here’s my top tip for a great Monday;

🌟 Plan for Monday on the previous Friday!

Here’s how it works. When I finish my week on Friday, I review my progress. Then I set my top 3 goals for next week. Then I plan out what I MUST do to hit those goals.

That way I hit Monday with a clear plan and I’m ready to go. It makes my Mondays so much more efficient.

Monday also includes a very large coffee ☕️
