Happy !

🌱 Wetlands cover only 6% of the worlds' land surface, yet 40% of all plants and animals depend on them.

They are biodiversity hotspots, and they act as powerful carbon sinks helping to fight climate change.

⚠️ But they're also the ecosystems with the highest rates of decline, loss, and degradation.

That’s why the EU Habitat Directive protects 28 wetland habitat types, such as peatlands and wet forests, listing them as priority habitats for restoration actions.

The EU Nature Restoration Regulation focuses on restoring wetlands by:

🦆 increasing biodiversity
đź’§ securing the things nature does for free, like cleaning our water and air and protecting us from floods
🌡️ limiting global warming to 1.5°C
🌽 preventing natural disasters and reducing risks to food security

🆕 With the LIFE programme's biggest project so far – LIFE HumedalES – the EU will restore more than 26,000 hectares of wetlands across Spain.

“Ecosystem collapse threatens the foundations of security. The proportionate response is ecocide law.”

In a new article for Earth.Org Stop Ecocide International’s Jojo Mehta discusses the new national security assessment produced by the UK's intelligence community, which identifies ecosystem collapse as a direct threat to security and prosperity.

This is not environmental advocacy - it’s a threat assessment conducted by trained security analysts.

In the face of these dire threats, voluntary commitments and piecemeal regulations are clearly inadequate. This is where comes in.

Criminalising mass harm to nature provides the necessary legal accountability by establishing clear consequences for severe environmental destruction.

International momentum is building, with Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo proposing recognition of at the International Criminal Court, major regional progress in Europe and domestic ecocide bills advancing globally.

At just 12 years old, Rebecca Young from Glasgow, Scotland is reimagining how we care for people experiencing homelessness.

She invented a solar-powered heated blanket; a fully portable, electricity-free source of warmth designed to protect people through cold nights. Charged by solar panels during the day, the blanket delivers up to eight hours of heat, adapts to temperature changes, and is waterproof, flame-retardant, and designed like a sleeping bag. It even includes storage for personal belongings.

Engineers helped bring Rebecca’s prototype to life, and it’s now being developed for production. In fact, the blankets are already reaching homeless shelters. When empathy meets innovation, impact can start at any age.
