Good morning!!! 🌞 🌞 🌞 🏖️ 🏖️ 🏖️

Beautiful beach weather here at Bournemouth today and it’s forecast to be 35 - 40 degrees! There’s a lovely south easterly breeze today too, however, if you’re going to the beach at the South Coast today and you go in the water, please make sure you swim between the lifeguard flags as south easterlies cause strong rips! 🏖️

After work, I took Frank the Tank to meet the amazing Keren from Helpful Hounds Assistance Dogs for his weekly autism assistance lesson. This time, we met up at Castle Point shopping centre during a busy period where Keren taught Frank how to be calm and relaxed whilst walking around the shops. Keren also taught me better handling skills and commands when handling Frank, ready for when we are out with Bodhi. Frank worked super hard and he enjoyed every minute! We also spent time letting Frank lay down in the middle of a busy shops for a rest so he could watch the world go by! Frank the Tank is doing amazing with his autism assistance dog training, we are very proud of him. Next lesson, myself, Keren and Frank the Tank are going shopping with Bodhi!! ❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾

It's less than two weeks before I go to a prize giving awards evening at Bournemouth University. I have been selected to receive The Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust Award in recognition of my achievements while studying at BU which is awarded to a Mental Health Nursing Student who has gone above and beyond in their care and compassion for patients In recognition of achievement for academic performance and evidence of excellent performance in clinical practice. I have also been selected to receive the Bournemouth University BSc Mental Health Nursing Award, which is awarded to the best overall, sustained, performance in academic work and clinical practice.

Myself and Charlie are taking Bodhi & Frank the Tank with us to the evening so that Bodhi & Frank can collect both of my awards together. The EPIC Keren from Helpful Hounds Assistance Dogs is also coming along with us to help with Frank just in case Bodhi becomes overwhelmed. Keren is the head of animal welfare & behaviour for Helpful Hounds and is Frank and Bodhi's personal trainer teaching Frank to be an official autism assistance dog for Bodhi.

To help prepare Bodhi for the evening, I have created this social story, which I have printed and laminated so that Bodhi can keep it with him to help prepare him for the evening. We've also been chatting about the evening to help prepare Bodhi.

Why use a social story for autistic and neurodivergent children?

Social stories are EXTREMELY powerful communication tools, and in short they make the invisible become visible! Social stories reduce anxiety through predictability, they support perspective taking as we all have different thoughts and feelings about things. Social stories are also great for providing a script for situations, which may be difficult, allow for slow processing, and they absolutely help to building confidence!

This evening, Bodhi & Frank the Tank have been enjoying another lesson with Helpful Hounds Assistance Dogs head of welfare and behaviour trainer Keren! Frank is now an official autism assistance dog in training and he’s doing amazing with the training!! Helpful Hounds are an official charity that specialises in autism assistance dogs. Keren has been busy building a profile on Bodhi, his spectrum and sensory needs differences and then working with Frank how to meet Bodhi’s needs on a day to day basis and in times of crisis! It won’t be long now until Frank takes his Public Access Test and will then be an official autism assistance dog!

Feeling on top of the world!!!

Today, I have been offered a nursing job with the most incredible team (I’ve accepted!) at a CAMHS intensive care unit!

During COVID lockdown I set out (with Charlie’s support) to go to College and Bournemouth University to become a mental health nurse and work with neurodivergent children. Now, six years later I’m going into a job with an amazing team of people where I can help make a real difference to children’s and their families lives, and I can one day become a specialist in neurodivergence!

I’ve never felt more ready and prepared in my life. I’ve got my ambulance service background, which has given me the confidence and experience around physical issues, I’ve had a great education with Bournemouth Uni, but the best education has been learning to hear a child who doesn’t speak and the daily lived experience in today’s world with a profoundly autistic and ADHD child like Bodhi. Let’s goooooooooo!!! ❤️❤️❤️

This morning, myself and Bodhi are in bedquarters going through Bodhi’s favourite pictures that he took at Torbay airshow this weekend!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time with Bodhi teaching him more about composure with his photography, for example, using the horizon to keep his framing straight, or filling the frame with an aircraft. We spend almost all of our time at the end of the runway at Bournemouth airport, after school and all weekends with Frank the Tank where Bodhi has been practising all types of photography.

Bodhi did an amazing job with his photography at Torbay, and these are his favourite pictures. As always, I made sure the settings were right for the light and let Bodhi do the rest himself. I’ve edited these pics for Bodhi, cropping etc, and I’ve posted videos in the comments below of Bodhi taking the pics.

My kit is heavy for Bodhi to hold, and although I’m the most super proud Dad ever that Bodhi is only 8 years old, has only been speaking for just over a year and has managed to come so far already with his photography taking these epic pics of the RAF Red Arrows for the whole display, a lot of pics towards the end of the display were out of focus as he was struggling to hold the kit. That’s my next challenge, to find a way for him to comfortably hold my camera for longer periods. Amazing pics by Bodhi = one very proud Dad!! ❤️❤️❤️📸📸📸

Today, we’ve been celebrating Frank the Tank’s second birthday!

Bodhi & Frank the Tank have had a pawsome pool party with lots of bubbles and the hose pipe as it was too hot again for Frank to go out during the daytime. Tonight, Frank the Tank has a huge slab of steak for being the world’s best assistance dog, and best friend and protector for Bodhi ❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾

This morning, myself and Red 8.5 Bodhi have been in our bedquarters going through all the pictures he took at the English Riviera Airshow yesterday of the amazing RAF Red Arrows. This is his favourite picture that he took!

Bodhi took some AMAZING pictures yesterday, however, the best ones he took were towards the end of the display but they are out of focus as my camera and lens is too heavy for him to hold for long. As always, I made sure my camera had the right settings for the light and let Bodhi do the rest himself. This picture is not edited, only cropped as the light was perfect so this picture is 100% Bodhi’s! I’m so proud of him that he managed to hold my camera and lens throughout the entire display. Not bad for an 8 year old! I think Bodhi should be the Reds official photographer ❤️❤️❤️
❤️

I’ve posted a video of him taking this picture in the comments below.
