Self-build modular display systems are now firmly embedded in the exhibition and activation sector. Not as a replacement for everything else, but as a structured layer of capability.
• Contractors use them to improve labour efficiency.
• Activation agencies use them to control deployment.
• End users use them to reduce subcontract dependency on selected events.
What links all three is the same operational pressure: repeatability.
A modular system earns its place when it can be reused multiple times a year, reconfigured across stand sizes, transported efficiently, and updated without structural reinvestment.
Most systems fall into three categories:
Fast-build, graphics-led frames
Designed for seamless fabric presentation and rapid assembly. Common across backwalls, roadshows and repeat programmes where speed and flexibility matter. (e.g. ImageWall)
Structural modular truss systems
Used when span, height or AV load increases. These enable larger branded environments without reverting to timber builds. (e.g. X-Module)
Illuminated lightbox systems
Backlit SEG fabric systems increase visibility in busy halls without adding complexity. Designed for repeat use and consistent performance.
These are no longer niche products. They are becoming standard infrastructure.
However, system choice should be driven by programme reality, not just appearance:
• How often will it be used?
• Will stand sizes vary?
• Is lighting essential?
• Will multiple teams install it?
• Does it need to scale from a shell scheme to an island?
• Is outdoor use required?
• Where will it be stored?
These questions determine whether a graphics-led, structural, or illuminated system, or a combination, is right.
There is also a lifecycle advantage. Reusable aluminium frameworks and tension fabric graphics reduce the use of single-use materials compared to repeated timber builds. Sustainability is built into the model.
Commercially, once the system is owned, costs shift to graphics updates and logistics rather than rebuild and disposal. Over 12–24 months, this changes budgeting behaviour:
• Contractors expand capability
• Agencies protect margin
• End users gain control
At XG, we supply ImageWall, X-Module, and Modular Lightboxes, alongside in-house textile graphics production, which is critical as systems evolve and reconfigure over time.
The goal is not just to supply frames, but to ensure consistent performance as programmes grow.
