How are you managing hazardous substances under COSHH?

Hazardous substances are an inherent risk in many industries, with potential long-term health impacts. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations require effective risk assessment and management to protect workers from exposure.

We provide an in-depth look at COSHH control measures, including the hierarchy of controls, from elimination and substitution to engineering controls and personal protective equipment. We also explore the importance of continuous monitoring and maintenance to ensure these measures remain effective over time.

Applying the right COSHH controls is critical for mitigating risk and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.

💨Workplace air monitoring for a recycled aluminium alloy producer

One of our occupational hygienists worked with a specialist foundry producing high-purity, recycled aluminium alloys for the aerospace and aviation industries. The goal was to confirm that metal fume and dust levels were safely below workplace exposure limits.

During the site visit, our consultant conducted personal and static air monitoring to assess exposure in workers’ breathing zones and the ambient environment. The results were visualised to highlight the effectiveness of existing controls and to identify opportunities for targeted improvements.

The findings provided clear evidence of Trident Metals’ compliance with the COSHH Regulations — giving the business confidence ahead of future audits and inspections, and demonstrating their strong commitment to protecting staff wellbeing.
