Tip Number 7:

Give before you ask

At the very least you should demonstrate some level of caring before asking for something. Ideally, you will give or offer something to your contact first. A successful business relationship, like any kind of relationship, is after all a two-way street.

To round off our week of tips for successful , here's a Bonus tip to help you along the way -

Tip Number 8:

Be Generous – the greatest and most successful networkers are those who genuinely like to help others. You can’t only reach out to contacts when you need something.

If you only take away one thing from reading this it should be that networking is a two-way street. In order to really succeed and build the kind of relationships and connections you want, you need to be willing to give of yourself.

Tip Number 6:

Think people, not positions

Don’t get caught up in only trying to form relationships with people in positions high up. It’s a lot easier to get to know someone and form a connection early in their career. Think about those people that seem to be going places and are really interesting, these are the people you want to start building a connection with. It is always easier to connect with someone you find genuinely interesting

Tip Number 5:

Be intriguing

Arousing people’s curiosity is a sure-fire way of making yourself stand out from the crowd, which in turn means people will remember you and should make it easier to help you start building those relationships. Just try to keep in mind that you want people to remember you for the right reasons.

Tip Number 4:

Help the people you want to connect with

Never assume that you can’t help someone, even if they seem like they are highly successful or are at a higher level than you would normally look to build a relationship with. It is always worth finding out a contact’s desires and concerns, in either their personal or professional life or both.

Tip Number 3:

Find easy ways to engage everyone else

In Sobel’s case ‘everyone else’ is around 1,000 people, he sends them his monthly newsletter. This is a simple, efficient way of reaching a lot of contacts at once and will enable you to maintain your relationships without having to give up more time than you might have available to dedicate to this task.

Tip #2: Pick your next level

Sobel suggests you have 50-100 people on this level. They can be people that have helped you previously or have the potential to do so in the future but who you maybe don’t know well enough to socialise with. You don’t have to keep in touch with these contacts as often as those that matter most to you. but it is still a good idea to build some kind of relationship with them. If you have a newsletter you could send it to anyone on this level as well as anything else you come across that they might find interesting.

Tip #1: Figure out who matters the most

In his book ‘Power Relationships’, Andrew Sobel calls these people the “critical few”. these are the contacts whose presence in your life is clearly important to your career, whether they are co-workers, customers, a mentor or anyone else you can think of whose help has been invaluable. The “critical few” is usually around 20 people or so. Make sure you stay in regular contact with these people, incorporate their interests into your communications to help build lasting relationships.
