As a carer, you deserve to look after yourself, too.

But we know that can sometimes be easier said than done when you’re balancing a caring role with the demands of daily life.

There are no easy answers, but it’s important to try and take time for yourself, even if it’s in small ways – like making the most of your breaks at work or listening to music on your daily commute.

It can also help to lean on friends and family, whether that’s asking them to step in so you can take a break, or chatting to someone who understands what you’re going through and can really listen.

And if you’re struggling, speak to your GP. Carers can often reach a crisis point before they realise that they’ve been struggling for a while in their role. But you don’t need to reach breaking point to ask for help, like counselling or extra support services.

Getting help and support before you think you need it is one way to prepare for the future. Some services have waiting lists, so it may be reassuring to know that you have a plan in place.

And if you need support or advice, we’re here for you too. Just give our Dementia Support Line a call on 0333 150 3456.

Daily Care Routines in Dementia

Daily care routines can bring comfort, structure, and reassurance to a person living with dementia.

As memory, understanding, and confidence change, ordinary tasks such as bathing, dressing, eating, taking medication, brushing teeth, or getting ready for bed may begin to feel confusing or overwhelming. What once felt simple may now require patience, guidance, and emotional safety.

A routine does not have to be perfect. It only needs to feel familiar, calm, and respectful.

In dementia care, routines help reduce uncertainty. When the day follows a gentle pattern, the person may feel more secure because they are not constantly trying to understand what comes next.

Simple routines can help with:

Morning care
Mealtimes
Medication reminders
Bathing and grooming
Changing clothes
Rest and quiet time
Meaningful activities
Evening and bedtime

The key is to slow the moment down.

Offer one step at a time.
Use short, simple instructions.
Keep choices limited but respectful.
Prepare items before beginning.
Maintain privacy during personal care.
Avoid rushing.
Speak calmly.
Explain before touching or helping.
Celebrate small cooperation.
Pause when distress begins.

A daily routine should not take away dignity. It should protect it.

For example, instead of saying, “You need to get dressed now,” try, “Would you like the blue shirt or the green one?” Instead of rushing through bathing, close the door, cover the body, explain each step, and give time for trust to settle.

Mealtimes may also need gentleness. A quiet table, familiar foods, small portions, and patient encouragement can help. If eating becomes difficult, coughing occurs, swallowing changes, or weight loss is noticed, medical advice is important.

Evening routines can also make a difference. Soft lighting, reduced noise, familiar music, prayer, or a calming bedtime pattern may help reduce restlessness and confusion.

Daily care is not only about completing tasks. It is about helping the person feel safe, respected, included, and loved.

Caregiver Wisdom:
A good routine does more than organize the day. It creates moments of safety, dignity, and calm. 💜

We know that every Forget Me Not tells a story, and everyone has their own personal reason for wearing it. But too often, our stories go untold.

But when millions of us wear it, people have to listen.

So today, we want as many people as possible to join in and tell us why you wear your badge, and what it means to you.

Whether you wear it in honour of a loved one, for vital support services, or to fund research – share your photos, tell your story, and make sure to tag us and use the hashtag .

Let’s speak up for everyone affected by dementia and show the world we stand together in hope that we can beat it.

Every Forget Me Not tells a story.

Tell us yours.
