Here's a turn up for the books - well not literally!

When we apply for awards, we never know what the outcome will be.

Here we go though, I'm a finalist in the Business Growth category of the Barking & Dagenham Business Awards.

I always tell everyone that every success should be celebrated and shared, so I'm only living up to myn own values.

Do you value talking to someone who is an expert and has different experience to you?

If you do, then finding a mentor might be a good move for you.

A mentor is someone who helps you to identify want you really want and investigates what might be the best route for you to achieve it.

Your mentor should be there to share their experiences and those of others whom they have had a positive impact with.

The right mento can help to cement ideas you have had, help to build new processes and strategies, and even to help create a structure that will drive your business forward.

At the end of the day, the mentee should be in control and the mentor should be able to adapt and help their mentee reach their desired outcome(s).

How much does common sense actually exist in the workplace?

If this is a strange thing to say, then why do I get so many notices from the HSE and the BSR about preventable accidents.

Keeping people safe in the workplace is one of those governance topics that is seemingly overlooked.

Why? Because if common sense truly existed, staff and contractors would have a good governance framework to follow.

Accidents would be reduced and the number of posts about preventable accidents would reduce.

Having just returned from holiday, there's a spring in my step. There's also a new appreciation for one of the quotes I use a lot.

I read one book, a fiction novel in practically no time, then I started a self-help book, That took way longer to read, in fact I still haven't finished it.

The reason is simple the fiction novel only required enough thought to follow the plot and keep up with the story, which was very exciting.

The self-help book required real thought and I struggled with the distraction away from the narrative to decide how, or whether, that particular set of content applied to me or not.

In short, I now have more appreciation for Henry Fords message (which I'm sure I'm paraphrasing) Thinking is the hardest thing we do - that's why we avoid it.

If that thought leads to a positive realisation, then that hard work is 100% justified. It's not about being arrogant, but it is a way to get affirmation of an achievement. All achievements - however small - should be recognised and celebrated.

The new standards for ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026 have now dropped, but they are yet to be published.

What will you do? Work towards a gradual shift to the new standards, or cram it all into the last year?

If you want to remain certified, you will need to consider how to make the transition from the 2015 standards to the 2026 ones.

All I know is – it’s going to be an interesting couple of years.

Change is inevitable. Without it we don’t grow.

From the womb to the grave we, as humans, need to grow, both physically and mentally. Without growing we would remain as helpless as the day we were born.

We don’t want our business to be like this – helpless. So, they too need to change.

Some change is forced upon us; some is required as we grow and some is needed to “keep up with the Joneses”.

We don’t normally fear change itself, we dislike what it brings – the need to think. Henry Ford ounce said something like this. We do not like to think as it is the hardest thing we do.

Without hard work we never become the best that we can be. Be that working faster, smarter, or being able to adapt to the ever-changing conditions our businesses operate in.

So, we manage change. Make sure it’s right for us and make any adjustments that may be required.

Most importantly, it has to be right for “us”. What is right for me, might not be right for you. But, eventually, change we must.

One of my favourite film quotes is from Forrest Gump – “Life is like a box of chocolates”.

The reason I like it is because it speaks to me about expectations. If you use the inlay in the box of chocolates, you know what each chocolate contains – well within a little.

What if it wasn’t there, how would you know which chocolate you’d like to try first and which one you’d have last. Some people like to save their favourites until the end, and some are the other way around. Without that guide you have no idea what you’re getting.

This typifies why mentoring works. You find yourself in a position with a whole host of opportunities, but there’s only a few things you recognise. Some you love being involved in, and some you hate.

So what to concentrate on first can be a real game changer. Having a mentor by your side can help you determine which is most important to address for your business. Their experience can be so beneficial for you.

How we support people can be very different, But here is what a Counselling service in Brentwood said:

Ian’s documents gave us a real sense of what we need to think about and as far as I can tell for the moment gives us a more than comprehensive starting point - although I could imagine there might be a few questions along the way regarding implementation.
Each section is very clear but I will read through again a few more times and if anything comes up I will check with you for sure.

It’s very obvious you have got to know our organisation really quickly and I much appreciate that you are making a potentially troublesome subject manageable & understandable for us.

“The only true Wisdom is in knowing you know nothing”. Don’t blame me for this, it’s what Socrates said.

Obviously not nothing about everything! But – we can often be stumped as to where to turn next to drive the business forward.

So take things a step at a time. Ask yourself things like - Who can help you? Can you identify the root of what is stopping you? Is it just a confidence thing?

Mentoring can be a way of getting over the stumbling blocks like these. It could be your route out of the doldrums!
