“Can we just get rid of them?” 🤔
It’s a question I’ve heard more than once over the years, and it is usually followed by something along the lines of, "They've been like this for months." Now that's the point I usually ask, "What happened during those months?"
Did anyone tell them there was a problem? Did anyone set clear expectations? Did anyone actually manage their performance? Or did everyone quietly put up with it and hope it would somehow sort itself out?
By the time HR gets involved, the manager is completely fed up. They want the problem solved, preferably immediately. In the meantime, the employee has no idea that things have reached breaking point.
That's not a great position for anyone to be in. Whilst difficult conversations are uncomfortable, avoiding them can cause far greater complications six months down the line. And, as much as I'd love one, no magic HR wand can fix the issue by the end of the week. 🪄
So here's my question: why do businesses tolerate something for six months and then suddenly want it fixed?
