You may have seen headlines about a few hundred arrests of people pointing out the outrageous overreach of terrorism legislation. However, at the same time, there were 250,000 - 300,000 people peacefully marching in solidarity with Palestine and against genocide.

This has gone woefully under reported, or not reported at all

Windmills pull quarter repeat rebuild. Roughly 30 parts over 2 months (West Dean time) and I'm pleased with the result. It's far from finished, not least the time side, but plenty of adjustments on the repeater side and the last few pieces to make (linkages etc). Most importantly it was ready for the exhibition week a few weeks ago. Huge thanks to Tom for loaning the movement, and for his exemplary tuition.

I look forward to rebuilding the time side in my spare time over the next few months.

Making the fly for the strike train of a pull quarter repeat Windmills table clock. Some careful hacksawing made quick work of the bulk material removal, however erring on the side of caution resulted in more filing than I was hoping for! Need to reduce the thickness slightly more still...

This Windmills movement started life as a silent pull quarter repeat verge and has been converted to a stinking anchor recoil. For my final project at West Dean I have, perhaps unwisely, undertaken an attempt to rebuild the pull quarter repeat mechanism. The working hypothesis is that it utilised a gear toothed sector and stepped face cam for the hours and quarters respectively, there are a few peculiarities around this arrangement which I'll elaborate on in further posts. I've been using CAD to sketch the layout of the more geometrically critical parts. The process of reverse engineering has been challenging and enjoyable, however I'm mainly worried about whether I'll have enough time to finish it! Watch this space as I potentially panic my way through the next few weeks 🫠

A little side project I've been working on. Rehousing and reimagining the mass produced 20th century mantle clock. The domestic clock has fallen from its place of pride in all but the homes of enthusiastic collectors and practitioners. I'm hoping to come up with a range of styles which better fit modern interior design aesthetics and bring these unloved movements back into service.

This is the first prototype using a classic Smiths Enfield movement, laser cut wood and acrylic, one-way mirror film, led filaments and standard nuts and bolts. Thoughts and comments welcomed!

Replacing a balance end stone setting and screw is quite the test of patience! Some excellent advice of rubbing the jewel before parting off from felt like the secret trick (along with 15 attempts!) The screw hold tread had also been stripped so I retapped with a M0.8 and made a matching screw. To cut the slot I filed a crude cutter from rod and carefully offered up the screw head, which just about worked! Not the best version of anything but, nicely formative task on which to end the term.

Great couple of days of engraving workshop with Angus. Tried my hand at some early English clock styles. Scroll is especially challenging. I find it interesting that the eye somehow automatically averages good and bad lines to give an overall impression. At one point I didn't at all like the piece, but persevering with add lines made some parts worse and others much better and it improved overall.

Making a fresh set of knife edge verge pallets for this fusee dial clock movement. Started with modelling the escapement to calculate the optimum angle, and length of the pallets, then filing and sawing, and filing, and filing, and more filing, and bending, harden and tempering, then polishing, etc! I find the use of guides, supports, and a simple swing tool are essential to minimise errors for such a manual process. Filing flat and square are near impossible for me so I shouldn't expect to!

I'm pleased with the result. Good action and amplitude without having to adjust the pallets themselves. It feels good to get to know the venerable verge and crown wheel escapement in more detail.

Who needs a fancy brass swing tool?! No-one if you've had a couple of bottles of wine!

Lots of remedial work on this 19th century long case! New parts include gathering abor, striking lifting arm, rack hook, hand collet, bell stand foot, click spring and fly spring. Other work included pallet refacing, escape wheel flatten and recolleted, let in material for fly pivot, painting hands, and of course the standard cleaning! It's now ticking evenly with a decent supplementary arch. Quite the journey for the first clock of the year!
